The men's discus throw at the World Athletics Championships in 1993 was held on August 16 and 17, 1993 in the Gottlieb Daimler Stadium in Stuttgart .

The German discus throwers won two gold and bronze medals in this competition. Defending champion Lars Riedel became world champion . The Russian Dmitri Shevchenko took second place . Bronze went to the Olympic champion in 1988 , Olympic champion in 1992 , world champion in 1987 , European champion in 1990 and world record holder Jürgen Schult .

doping

There was a doping case in this discipline.

The initially fourth-placed Lithuanian Romas Ubartas tested positive for the anabolic steroid boldenone and received a four-year ban. His result at these world championships was canceled.

Two athletes in particular suffered:

qualification

Thirty participants competed in two groups for the qualifying round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 63.00 m. Four athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue), including Romas Ubartas, who was later disqualified for doping fraud. The final field was filled with the eight athletes placed next to twelve throwers (highlighted in light green). So finally 61.52 m had to be achieved to take part in the finals.

For Imrich Bugár (here in 2013) , the world champion from 1983 , European champion from 1982 and European championship third from 1978 , it was not enough for the final with his 58.76 m
