Two athletes in particular suffered:
- The eighth -placed American Mike Buncic was deprived of three attempts in the final, which would have allowed him in addition to his first three throws.
- Sergey Lukashok from Israel , as the twelfth-best thrower after qualifying, was actually entitled to participate in the final.
qualification
Thirty participants competed in two groups for the qualifying round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 63.00 m. Four athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue), including Romas Ubartas, who was later disqualified for doping fraud. The final field was filled with the eight athletes placed next to twelve throwers (highlighted in light green). So finally 61.52 m had to be achieved to take part in the finals.
