The 10,000-meter run for women at the 1997 World Athletics Championships was held on August 2nd and 5th, 1997 in the Olympic Stadium in the Greek capital, Athens .
The Kenyan World Cup third in 1993 was Sally Barsosio . Second place went to the Portuguese defending champion and European champion from 1994 Fernanda Ribeiro , who was also vice world champion and world record holder in 1995 over 5000 meters . Here she was third over 5000 meters four days later. Bronze went to the Japanese Masako Chiba .

The existing world championship record was not set and not improved at these world championships. The 31-minute mark was not undercut.
The Iraqi Maysa Matrood set a new national record in the second run on August 2 with 35: 44.93 minutes.
Preliminary round
The preliminary round was held in two runs. The first eight athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - as well as the four fastest runners - highlighted in light green - qualified for the final.
