history
Micron was founded in Boise, Idaho in 1978 by Ward Parkinson, Joe Parkinson, Dennis Wilson, and Doug Pitman. The startup was financed by local investors Tom Nicholson, Allen Noble and Ron Yanke. Further expansion was financed by John Simplot .
In 1981 Micron first produced DRAM chips with a storage capacity of 64 Kbits. By consistently controlling costs, Micron survived several downturns in the DRAM market, which forced important competitors to exit the market. Even Intel , the inventor of DRAM, was forced to abandon this business area in 1985.
In 1994, co-founder Joe Parkinson resigned as CEO and Steve Appleton took over management of the company until his accidental death on February 3, 2012. Interim successor is Mark Durcan.
In the early 1990s, the subsidiary Micron Computers (today: Micron Electronics) was founded as a manufacturer of PCs. In 1999, another subsidiary, Micron Internet Services, was added to bundle Internet activities. Both divisions were sold to web.com and MPC in 2001.
Micron acquired memory production from Texas Instruments in 1998 and Toshiba in 2001 .
In 2005, Intel Corporation and Micron Technology, Inc agreed to collaborate to manufacture flash memory called IM Flash Technologies, LLC, and in 2006 they built a joint facility in Singapore .
In 2006, Micron acquired Lexar , a manufacturer of flash memory .
In 2015, Micron and Intel agreed another joint venture , 3D XPoint, for the development and manufacture of non-volatile memory technology .
Micron acquired Tidal Systems in 2015 , and in 2016 completely acquired the Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer Inotera Memories, Inc. from Nanya Technology .
Micron was the world market leader in the field of CMOS image sensors (2006). Aptina Imaging emerged from Micron Imaging in 2008 and was sold to ON Semiconductor in 2014 .
Since April 2017, Sanjay Mehrotra has been the new President and CEO at Micron.
In mid-2017, the Lexar brand was sold to the Chinese company Longsys.
