Game in the Lingerie Football League between the teams "Denver Dream" and "LA Temptation"

The Legends Football League , formerly Lingerie Football League ( English for underwear football league ), LFL for short , is an American - Canadian football league for women. The specialty of this indoor league is that the players only play in underwear and with short shoulder protection and a helmet. Together with the name change between the 2011/2012 and 2013 season, it was also decided that a development into a "serious sports league" should take place.

history

The idea for the Lingerie Football League first came in 2003, when the Lingerie Bowl was played for the first time as a pay-per-view broadcast during the half-time break of the Super Bowl . This was an alternative to the usual halftime show and had a few million viewers. In 2009, the only game became a whole league with ten teams. The lingerie bowl will continue to be played in the middle of the Super Bowl.

regulate

Seven players per team play on a 50  yard long and 30 yard wide playing field. The rules are similar to those of arena football . Basically, these are rules of tackle football, ie contact sport is practiced (as opposed to flag football ). Significant deviations from the usual rules are e.g. B. that there are no field goals . Punts were introduced for the 2015 season, but can only be performed within your own 10 yards.

Two real 10 minutes are played per half with a half-time break of 12 minutes. If there is no winner at the end of regular playing time, the winner will be determined in one or more sudden death overtimes for eight minutes.

The Legends Football League schedule was unique among the indoor football leagues in that the game played during the traditional football season in the fall and not in the spring, as is the case with other indoor football leagues. As part of the expansion in 2012, this was partially changed and the 2012/2013 season of the LFL in the United States was postponed to spring and summer 2013.

Expansion, the Lingerie Football League All-Star Game in Sydney

expansion

In the early days, the Lingerie and Legends games were basically very successful, so almost all games were sold out. Therefore, an expansion of gaming operations to other countries or continents was planned. As part of this expansion, further leagues were founded as an offshoot of the LFL, limited to the USA from the 2012/2013 season. These were LFL Canada, LFL Australia and LFL Europe. LFL Canada began playing in the 2012 season. LFL Australia began playing in the 2013/2014 season. Due to the economic crisis, LFL Canada and LFL Australia stopped playing after two and one season respectively. LFL Europe did not even start playing.

At the beginning of 2018, the LFL announced its plans for the future. The league plans to start or resume play on the markets in Australia, Canada and Europe between 2020 and 2022.

The first two of the respective seasons played the Conference Championship on January 29, 2011. As in 2010, Philadelphia became Passion Master in the Eastern Conference . The team from California won its third national championship in a row after the conference.

2012/2013 season

The Eastern and Western Conference had to be rebuilt for the season. This became necessary because Toronto Triumph left the Eastern Conference for the new LFL Canada. For the Eastern and Western Conference either a reactivation of the non-gaming New York Majesty or Miami Caliente was planned and / or the award of new franchises in other cities. In the end, new franchises were given to Omaha Heart and Atlanta Steam . The Tampa team moved to Jacksonville and changed the name to Jacksonville Breeze accordingly . Furthermore, Orlando Fantasy did not participate in the game operation. Despite the name change and the realignment announced with it, nothing significantly changed in the playing attire for the 2012/2013 season.

In contrast to the previous seasons, the season will also be postponed from autumn and winter to spring and summer. The season started on April 30, 2013 with the game Atlanta Steam against Jacksonville Breeze . Here triumphed Jacksonville Breeze with 48 to 0. The last game of the regular season was on August 10, 2013 between Chicago Bliss and Green Bay Chill .

The regular season in the Eastern Conference ended with Baltimore Charm in first place. They also fought for victory in the Northeastern Division at the same time. The victory in the Southeastern Division went to Atlanta Steam , which also achieved second place in the final table of the Eastern Conference. As third in the table in the East Philadelphia Passion reached the playoffs. of the Western Conference, Seattle Mist took first place and the Pacific Division title. The title in the Midwestern Division went to Chicago Bliss . Los Angeles Temptation was able to qualify as the third playoff participant in the West .

At the end of the season, on August 17, 2013, the two in second and third place in the table of each group in the Conference Division Playoff Game determined the challenger of their respective group leaders. In that game, Philadelphia Passion defeated Atlanta Steam by 28 to 20 in the East Season . In the west Los Angeles Temptation was defeated by the Chicago Bliss team 12 to 19. The resulting Conference Championship Games took place on August 24, 2013. In the Eastern Conference, on the one hand, the Baltimore Charm team lost 19 to 20 Philadelphia Passion . In the west, Chicago Bliss defeated the Seattle Mist squad 31-14.

2014 season

The league also needed to be rebuilt for the 2014 season. The Eastern and Western Conference, which had recently been divided into two divisions, were once again single. The conversion resulted from the reduction of the league to ten teams. The teams from Philadelphia Passion and Minnesota Valkyrie no longer participated in the league operation. The Cleveland team moved to Toledo, Ohio and changed the name to Toledo Crush .

The season opened on April 12, 2014 with the game between Jacksonville Breeze and Baltimore Charm .

criticism

LFL President Mitchell S. Mortaza admits that the LFL target group is mostly beer-drinking students over the age of 21, but the league claims to entice audiences with the sex appeal of the players, and then captivate them with athletic class and gives to the fact that the players are underpaid because the league is underfunded. The LFL is often criticized as “sexist soft pornography”, although parallels are drawn with beach volleyball , in which players are also only allowed to wear a tight bikini . As more serious, the court website The Smoking Gun rated “the low salaries and insurance sums” for the players, arbitrary punishments for “inappropriate behavior” and a clause in which “accidental nudity during the game” (e.g. by tearing off the top a tackle) is to be accepted with signature as a "sporting risk".
