The state parliament officiated in the XX. Legislative period from October 29, 1964 until the inauguration of the XXI. Legislative period on October 29, 1969.

Of the 36 MPs, the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) had 20 MPs after the state elections in 1964 . 10 MPs were from the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ), 6 from the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), whereby the FPÖ was able to win an additional mandate compared to the state elections in 1959 at the expense of the ÖVP.

Functions

Landtag President

According to the state constitution, the right to the position of the state parliament president fell, unless the state parliament groups agreed otherwise, to the party with the strongest vote and thus to the ÖVP. In the first state parliament session on October 29, 1964, Karl Tizian was elected as the new state parliament president. In the written election, 36 votes were cast, 34 of which were for Titian. One vote was invalid, another was empty. The election of the vice-presidents of the state parliament took place on the same day in accordance with the state assembly, including the president according to the principles of proportional representation, whereby the SPÖ had the right to propose the office of 1st vice-president and the ÖVP the right to propose the office of 2nd vice-president. As a result, Walter Peter (SPÖ) was elected 1st Vice President of the State Parliament with 33 out of 36 valid votes, Friedrich Heinzle (ÖVP) received 34 out of 36 votes in his election as 2nd Vice President of the State Parliament. In the election of the vice-presidents, one vote was invalid and one or two votes remained empty.

Club chairmen

Ignaz Battlogg was elected the new chairman of the ÖVP state parliament club in 1964. In the SPÖ, Josef Schoder held the office of chairman of the state parliament, which he had already taken over in 1959. In the FPÖ, Elwin Blum was the club chairman.

Federal Councilors

According to Article 31 of the Federal Constitution, the states are represented in the Bundesrat, with the state parliament electing the members to be delegated for the duration of their legislative period according to the principle of proportional representation. According to the state elections in 1964, the first Bundesrat belonged to the ÖVP, the second Bundesrat to the SPÖ and the third to the ÖVP again. In the elections held on the first day of the session, Hans Bürkle (ÖVP), Anton Mayrhauser (SPÖ) and Hans Pitschmann (ÖVP) were delegated by the state parliament to the Federal Council, with Bürkle and Pitschmann each gaining 31 votes and Mayrhauser 36.
