The Massachusetts Avenue , by residents briefly Mass Ave called, is a major thoroughfare in the state of Massachusetts of the United States , by Boston northwest leads and some other cities and suburbs of Boston. "Its 16 miles of black asphalt run from sandy industrial areas to leafy suburbs, passing gentrified sandstone houses, colleges, and bustling business parks ."

Route

The street begins in the Boston borough of Dorchester and initially runs parallel to Interstate 93 from southeast to northwest through Boston, to then form an interchange with the Massachusetts Turnpike ( Interstate 90 ) . It crosses the Charles River with the Harvard Bridge from the Back Bay district to the city of Cambridge , where it divides the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . The course continues through Central Square and around Harvard Yard in Harvard Square . The road then bends sharply north and leads past Harvard Law School and across Porter Square , where it turns northwest. From there, Mass Ave continues through North Cambridge , Arlington and Lexington , where it joins the Minute Man National Historical Park .

Extended consideration of the route

Under the same name, the road continues to the northwest and west through many different cities and suburbs. For the most part, it runs parallel to or is identical to Massachusetts Route 2 or Massachusetts Route 2A and, with the exception of a few gaps in places that have given their main thoroughfare a different name, can be followed all the way to central Massachusetts.

For most of its route, Massachusetts Avenue is a magnet for business, especially in the larger cities. There are apartments, shops, and restaurants on either side of the street, and there are a high number of pedestrians.

The road passes or through parks in some places, including Southwest Corridor Park , part of the Emerald Necklace on Commonwealth Avenue , the Charles River Bike Path , Alewife Linear Park , the Alewife Brook Reservation, and the Minuteman Bikeway .

In Cambridge the street partly follows the former Front Street and the former Main Street . It follows the original North Avenue from Harvard Square to Alewife Brook . In Arlington it was formerly called Arlington Avenue and in Lexington Main Street .

Transportation

The Massachusetts Avenue is in the context of public transport with a variety of transport operated. This includes more than 30 bus lines and the metro -lines Green Line , Red Line and Orange Line of the MBTA , between Lexington run and Boston.
