Monumento al Meridiano Cero

At the ancient Ferro meridian (18 ° 8 ′ west) on the Canary Island El Hierro stands a stylized globe set in a concrete stele.

In the following, monuments are listed at 0–180 ° east of the prime meridian.

Prime Meridian

In Greenwich at zero longitude , the Meridian Line is marked in the form of an architectural fissure that runs right through the Flamsteed House , which formerly housed the Royal Greenwich Observatory and is now part of the National Maritime Museum . There is also an old stone tablet. Today's longitude 0 of the WGS84 (wayside cross 0 ° ) is about 100 m from the old observatory ( 51 ° 28 ′ 40.2 ″  N , 0 ° 0 ′ 5.7 ″  W ).

Meridian of Paris

The meridian of Paris at 2 ° 20 ′ 14 ″ is an old reference meridian that was replaced by the Greenwich prime meridian but was in use from 1718 to 1884 ( International Meridian Conference ). It is marked in the Salle méridienne (Salle Cassini) in the Paris observatory ( 48 ° 50 ′ 11 ″  N , 2 ° 20 ′ 11.4 ″  E ), by some monuments ( outdoor area , Montsouris ) and the Arago medallions in Paris. This monument commemorates the geographer and cartographer Gerardus Mercator (1512–1594), who grew up in Gangelt from 1512 to 1518.

In Kiischpelt , a municipality in the north of Luxembourg, at 50 ° 0 ′ 0 ″  N , 6 ° 0 ′ 0 ″  E there is the only intersection between a main latitude and a main longitude in Luxembourg. Today the Kiischpelter Sonnenkreis is located at the intersection .

Altona Meridian

The Altona Meridian was the starting point for the measurement of the entire Danish state and Altona as well as for the topographical mapping of Holstein , Hamburg and Lauenburg by the astronomer and geodesist Heinrich Christian Schumacher in the 19th century. The value of 0 s (hours), 30 '(minutes) 25' '(seconds) determined by Schumacher corresponds to a degree angle of 7 ° 36' 15 '' East - these two relate to the meridian of Paris as the basis. Adding the value of Paris (2 ° 20 ′ 14 ″) gives (approximately) 9 ° 56 ′ 29 ″ in the current system.

The Altona Meridian is marked today by a bronze rail embedded in the ground at the Königstraße stop of the Hamburg S-Bahn (exit Struenseestraße ) with the inscription “Altona Meridian 0s 30 '25 ″ east of Paris”. A vertical continuation runs on the wall of the building, next to which there is also a memorial plaque for Heinrich Christian Schumacher.
