Mikhail Yurevich Hrabouski ( Belarusian Міхаіл Юревіч Грабоўскі ; Russian Михаил Юрьевич Грабовский ; English transcription: Mikhail Yuryevich Grabovski * 31 January 1984 in Potsdam ) was a Belarusian ice hockey player , who for many years with the Montreal Canadiens , Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Islanders was active in the National Hockey League . Since June 2019 he has been an assistant coach at HK Dinamo Minsk .
Career
Hrabouski initially played for HK Junost Minsk and moved to Neftechimik Nizhnekamsk in the Russian Super League in 2003 . There the franchises of the National Hockey League became aware of him and he was drawn in the fifth round of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft in 150th place by the Montréal Canadiens . For the 2005/06 season he moved within Russia to HK Dynamo Moscow . With this he won the IIHF European Champions Cup in January 2006 and once again drew attention to himself with strong performances during the tournament.
The 2006/07 season began the center with the Hamilton Bulldogs , the Canadiens farm team in the American Hockey League . In January 2007 he was appointed to the squad of the Canadiens for the first time and made his debut on January 6 against the New York Rangers in the NHL, but came only to a total of three missions. He returned to the Bulldogs in the AHL and won the Calder Cup with them in June . The following season commuted Hrabouski, who in the meantime his compatriots Andrej and Sjarhej Kaszizyn were placed to the side, between the NHL and AHL squad. In the summer of 2008 he was finally transferred to the Toronto Maple Leafs , where he made his final breakthrough in the NHL under head coach Ron Wilson . This earned him the first Belarusian Player of the Year award in 2009.
In July 2013, his contract was early paid off by the Toronto Maple Leafs (buy out) . He then joined the Washington Capitals in August 2013 by signing a one-year contract there. This was not renewed after the 2013/14 season, so he signed a four-year contract as a free agent with the New York Islanders .
After suffering several concussions , Hrabouski was out for the entire 2016/17 season, although it remained unclear whether he would ever return to professional ice hockey. As a result, the Islanders gave his contract to the Vegas Golden Knights as part of the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft . In return, Vegas received Jean-François Bérubé and Jake Bischoff in the draft , a first-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 2017 and a second-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 2019 .
In June 2019 he was introduced as the new assistant coach at HK Dinamo Minsk and thus effectively ended his playing career.
International
For the 2005 World Cup in Austria , he was appointed to the Belarusian national ice hockey team. There he scored four goals in a game against hosts Austria . The year before, as a 20-year-old, he had already played a key role in the team's promotion to the top division. Born in the former GDR , he had other appearances in the national dress at the World Championships in 2004 , 2006 , 2008 , 2009 , 2010 and 2011 as well as in qualifying for the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin .
In the junior division, Hrabouski represented his home country at the U18 World Junior Championship in 2002 . He also played in the U20 in 2002 , 2003 and 2004 .
