Sankt Margarethen bei Knittelfeld is a municipality with 2687 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Murtal district and the judicial district of Judenburg in Styria . As part of the structural reform in Styria , the municipalities of Sankt Lorenzen bei Knittelfeld and Rachau were incorporated on January 1, 2015 .

Sankt Margarethen bei Knittelfeld is an alluvial cone settlement in Upper Styria south of the Mur and southeast of the city of Knittelfeld.

history
The place was part of the Mark Steiermark, created in 1122, which was separated from Bavaria as the Duchy of Styria in 1180 . From 1192 the area was ruled by the Babenbergs in personal union between Austria and Styria. From 1282 to 1918 the area was under the rule of the Habsburgs .
The political community of St. Margarethen was established in 1849/50.
On November 6, 1918, Sankt Margarethen near Knittelfeld came to the Republic of German-Austria as part of Styria. After Austria was annexed to the German Reich in 1938 , the place became part of the Reichsgau Steiermark . 1945 to 1955 he was part of the British zone of occupation in Austria.

- On October 2nd, 1993, a biotope was opened in the community with a festive event and honored with the award of the environmental protection award of the Province of Styria . Since then, the place has provided a habitat for many animals and plants on the one hand, but also a recreational area for people.

Since 2017, St. Margarethen, together with the communities of Spielberg , Zeltweg , Seckau , Gaal , St. Marein-Feistritz , Lobmingtal and Kobenz, has been part of the Tourismus am Spielberg tourist region , which has its office directly on the Red Bull Ring .
Gravel lake
In 2012, the small lake was taken over by the Spielberg project ( Dieter Mateschitz ) and operated as a leisure facility under the Grüne Lagune brand. According to its own statement, the bathing pond has water quality 1 (= drinking water), offered a leased restaurant and opportunities for recreational sports.
In March 2018 it became public that the owner showed little interest in reopening the leisure activities in the summer of 2018 after the tenant of the restaurant had withdrawn. However, the mayor would like to continue operating.

coat of arms
The municipal coat of arms was awarded with effect from May 1, 1980. Due to the amalgamation of the municipalities, the coat of arms lost its official validity on January 1, 2015. The re-award took place with effect from March 20, 2016.
The blazon reads:
- “In a silver shield, two red oars growing in stakes in the base of the shield between three red long-handled hammers; the hammers hitting one another extend to the middle of the shield and form a bar above which a green dragon looking forward is chained by a black collar and a black chain in the middle of the upper edge of the shield. "
