Mouscron ( Dutch Moeskroen [ muˈskrun ]) is a city in the Walloon part of Belgium and is located there in the province of Hainaut . Mouscron is the administrative seat of the arrondissement of the same name , which, in addition to Mouscron, also includes the Hennegau exclave Comines-Warneton .
location
The city is located around 110 kilometers west of the state capital Brussels , directly on the French border, around ten kilometers northwest of the French city of Lille , to whose metro network it is to be connected in the future. In this area, the Franco-Belgian border often follows urban roads and runs through gardens and densely populated areas.
history
The oldest surviving document mentioning Mouscron dates back to 1060.
Since September 1, 1963, Mouscron has become part of the province of Hainaut and thus Wallonia due to the predominant French language (94% in 1846, 74% in 1947), after it was previously part of West Flanders .
The present municipality emerged in 1977 from the merger of the four places Mouscron, Luingne, Herseaux (Herzeeuw) and Dottignies (Dottenijs). Mouscron is Facility Municipality ; this means that public and administrative services are also offered in the language of the Flemish minority.
In 1986 Mouscron was officially declared a city.
The long-time mayor Jean-Pierre Detremmerie was replaced by Alfred Gadenne ( CDH ) in 2006 . He was found at the age of 71 on the evening of September 11, 2017 with his throat cut in the Luingne cemetery. A suspect was arrested in the cemetery.
Brigitte Aubert has been the mayor's successor since October 2, 2017, making her the first woman in this position.
