NGC 7679 is an active Lenticular galaxy with extended star formation from the Hubble type S0 in the constellation fish on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 235 million light years from the Milky Way and approximately 155,000 light years across . Together with NGC 7682 , it forms the galaxy pair Arp 216 .
Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class of galaxies with adjacent loops . In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 7685 and NGC 7687 .
The object was discovered on September 23, 1864 by the astronomer Heinrich d'Arrest with his 11-inch telescope and later included in his New General Catalog by Johan Dreyer .
