Ohaba ( German  Neudorf , Hungarian Székásszabadja ) is a Romanian community in the Alba district in Transylvania .

Geographical location

Location of Ohaba Municipality in Alba County

The municipality of Ohaba is located in the Zekesch Highlands (Podișul Secașelor) in the southwest of the Transylvanian Basin . Located on the district road (Drum județean) DJ 106K, the place Ohaba is about 40 kilometers east of the district capital Alba Iulia (Karlsburg) (14 kilometers, as the crow flies).

history

The place Ohaba was first mentioned in 1372 under the Hungarian name villa Wyfalw and since 1733 under the current name.

Military tax notices from 1818, 1830 and 1848 show that the number of servants in the place steadily increased and that from 1823 until the revolution of 1848 all residents were servants.

In 1850 there were 1757 inhabitants in the area of ​​today's municipality; 1718 of them were Romanians and 39 Roma . 1956 the largest population was registered with 3264, also that of the Romanians (3259). The highest number of Hungarians (31) was recorded in 1900, Germans (7) in 1890 and Roma (39) in 1850. The population decreased significantly from 1956; In 2002 there were still 920 people living in the community; 914 were Romanians, three Hungarians and three Roma.
