Olmeta-di-Tuda is a municipality with 488 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haute-Corse department on the French island of Corsica .

geography

Olmeta-di-Tuda is located in the northeast of Corsica in the Nebbio landscape at an average altitude of 115 meters above sea level, 13 kilometers southwest of the port city of Bastia , the seat of the prefecture of the Haute-Corse department. The village is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Vallecalle , Oletta and Rutali . The municipality has an area of ​​17.4 square kilometers.

history

The place name Olmeta is derived from the Corsican word òlmu for ' elm '.

During the Second World War (1939-1945), Olmeta-di-Tuda was the scene of a liberation battle. On September 30, 1943, the Corsican Resistance fought there together with the 1st Regiment of the Tirailleurs marocains (' Tirailleurs from French Morocco ') against the German occupiers. A memorial was later erected at the site of the battle.

Culture and sights

The church de l'Assomption ('Assumption of Mary') was built in the 17th century in the classicist Renaissance style. It has two small bell towers that are enthroned above the entrance facade. There are three paintings from the 17th century in the church. “ The Annunciation ” was painted in 1627 by the artist Nicolao Castigliani from Bastia. The " Sacrifice of Isaac " was painted by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571–1610). The third painting shows Jesus driving the traders out of the temple. The three images have been classified as Monument historique ('historical monument').

The castle Château de Tuda consists of two mansions from the 16th century, originally the seigneurial family Campocasso and Kammerprokurator belonged Casale. Louis Visconti (1791-1853) connected the buildings in the 19th century. Jean de Lattre de Tassigny (1889–1952) used the castle as his headquarters in 1943 during the liberation of Corsica . The castle is now privately owned and is entered in the additional directory of the Monuments historiques.

There are still some buildings that belong to a copper mine that was set up in the 19th century. The company was finally closed in 1909.
