August 9, 2012, 9:00 p.m.
Twelve athletes had qualified for the final, nine of them beyond the qualification range. three more about their placements. Three Germans fought for the medals together with one participant each from Australia, China, Iceland, Canada, Latvia, Russia, Slovenia, South Africa and the Czech Republic.
The top favorite was the 2008 Czech Olympic champion and world record holder Barbora Špotáková. Her strongest opponents were above all the Russian Marija Abakumowa as reigning world champion , the German Olympic runner-up from 2008 Christina Obergföll and the South African World Cup third Sunette Viljoen.
Špotáková took the lead in the first lap with 66.90 m, followed by Obergföll, who had achieved 65.16 m. Viljoen was third behind with 64.53 m. After three rounds nothing had changed. Abakumowa had failed to qualify for three more attempts in the round of the top eight. She was eliminated as tenth.
In the fourth round, Špotáková rose to 69.55 m, while the German Linda Stahl improved to third with 64.91 m. There were no more changes at the top in the last two laps.
After Ruth Fuchs from the GDR - in 1972 and 1976 - Barbora Špotáková was only the second female javelin thrower to repeat her Olympic victory. Each of Špotáková's four other valid attempts would have been enough for the gold medal.
