Ortona |
Ortona is a port city in the Italian province of Chieti with 22,787 inhabitants and is located on the Adriatic coast about 22 kilometers southeast of the city of Pescara .
A massive citadel from the time of the Kingdom of Naples protects the historic old town, which is located on a protected spot above the harbor.
history
The very old city was conquered by the Franks in 803 . After military interludes, the city finally came under Neapolitan suzerainty in the 13th century .
In 1258 the bones of the apostle Thomas were transferred to Ortona - an indication that the city must have been important at the time. Today they are in the publicly accessible crypt in the Church of San Tommaso (St. Thomas).
During the Second World War, the Allies bombed the city of Ortona and the surrounding area for six months in 1943 in preparation for a breakthrough through the Gustav Line , a line of defense of the German Wehrmacht south of Ortona. From December 20 to 28, 1943, there was a one-week battle between German paratroopers and units of the 1st Canadian Infantry Division ( Battle of Ortona ). Winston Churchill described the house-to-house war, which was fought with extreme severity, as " Stalingrad of Italy", since - similar to the Russian city - almost all houses in Ortona were completely destroyed.
To commemorate the battle a memorial for the fallen Canadians was built in 2006 in the city of Ortona, in the military cemetery Moro River Canadian War Cemetery are in the south of the city. The Battle of Ortona is one of the most important and costly battles of the Second World War for the Canadian Army . A documentary film "Ortona 1943: a bloody Christmas present" produced by SD Cinematografica tells the story of this most difficult time for Ortona in the 20th century.
