    The Parliament of the Republic of Moldova ( Romanian Parlamentul Republicii Moldova ) is the legislative assembly of the Republic of Moldova (Moldova), which has been independent since 1991 . The unicameral system applies .

    Electoral process

    The Moldovan Parliament has 101 members who are elected every four years by the electorate. Both party lists and individual candidates can compete. Election alliances from several parties have not been permitted for several years. Any list that overcomes the threshold of 5% of the total number of votes ( 6% up to the elections in April 2009 ) is entitled to mandates in parliament . The seats are then allocated according to the D'Hondt procedure .

    Competences of Parliament

    One of the first tasks of parliament after a poll is the election of the president. This must be elected with a three-fifths majority of the MPs (currently at least 61 votes). The president proposes a candidate for the post of head of government. This and the ministers appointed by him must be confirmed by parliament. If none of the candidates can achieve the necessary majority for the office of president, the incumbent president is obliged to dissolve parliament and to call new elections. Legislative proposals can be introduced to parliament by MPs or the government.

    On June 8, 2019, the parliament elected Zinaida Greceanîi as its new president. The Constitutional Court declared the election null and void in the wake of a brief state crisis. For a short time there were two governments. But after only a week the situation was resolved. Ilan Shor and Vladimir Plahotniuc went into exile and Zinaida Greceanîi remained the only recognized speaker of parliament.

    Current development

    From exile, Shor and Plahotniuc bought fractions that were strengthened by money. The faction of Shor's party has grown and Plahotniuc created the "Pro Moldova" faction through his godson Andrian Candu. In June 2020, the governing coalition of democrats and socialists lost their majority.
