Independent Filipino Church

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Independent Philippine Church , also Aglipayan Church ( Tagalog and Spanish Iglesia Filipina Independiente , English Philippine Independent Church or Aglipay Church ), is an independent Catholic Church that is in church fellowship with the member churches of the Anglican Community , the Polish National Catholic Church and the Utrecht Union of Old Catholic Churches stands.

development

It was founded in 1902 under the leadership of Gregorio Aglipay y Labayán , a Roman Catholic priest and freedom fighter, as a kind of Catholic national church based in Manila . The church came into being at a time when the predominantly Catholic Philippines were striving for independence from Spain and therefore wanted to distance themselves from the Spanish-dominated Roman Catholic official church - and also because of church grievances. Gregorio Aglipay was excommunicated in 1899. The Iglesia Filipina Independiente, which was then proclaimed on August 3, 1902, rejected the authority of the Pope as well as celibacy. Rather, its theology and liturgy were based on genuine Filipino traditions. At times there were currents in the church which themselves rejected the doctrine of the Trinity , but in 1947 the church officially declared itself to believe in the Trinity with the adoption of its constitution. In 1959 the PIC became a member of the World Council of Churches.

The Iglesia Filipina Independiente now has approximately 3 million believers in the Philippines, the United States, and Canada. There are close relationships with the Anglican Church , in particular with the Episcopal Church of the Philippines (full sacrament community in 1961) and with the Old Catholic Churches (with the Union of Utrecht since 1965).
