Coat of arms of the Pilar von Pilchau

Pilar von Pilchau is the name of a Baltic noble family . The founding of the Baltic branch and admission to the Baltic knighthood goes back to Wenzel Pilar von Pilchau (1606–1675), who fought as a mercenary for the Swedish King Karl X. Gustav in Riga against tsarist Russia in 1656 .

history

In the Russo-Swedish War (1656–1658), the Imperial Russian Army began the siege of Riga in August 1656. The capture of Riga was delayed by the strong resistance under the orders of the Governor General of Livonia, Count Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie (1622–1686), whose defense forces were initially able to hold off the attacks. The Swedish field marshal, Count Hans Christoph von Königsmark , had recruited mercenaries in Germany to defend Riga in the spring of 1656. The German contingent consisted of around 1400 soldiers and was led by Wenzel Pilar von Pilchau . On September 12, 1656 they arrived in Riga by ship from Pillau (East Prussia). When the Russian attackers withdrew upstream of the Daugava , Wenzel Pilar von Pilchau pursued them in October with 600 men and 24 gunboats and drove the attack back. After 1658 he stayed in Riga and is considered to be the progenitor of the Pilar von Pilchau in the Baltic States.

Development and possessions

Wenzel Pilar von Pilchau came from a noble family of the former Duchy of Teschen , in connection with the family coat of arms its origin can be found in or around Willimau . After the successful defense of Riga, he remained in the Swedish service, was promoted to colonel and appointed as the commander of Narva . On February 14, 1746, the noble family was enrolled in the Livonian Knighthood (registration number 234) . The nobility title of baron was awarded to them by means of a senate uka in 1855 (ukus number 7867).

coat of arms

Coat of arms of the municipality of Vilémov u Litovle (Willimau)

The family coat of arms is borrowed from the coat of arms of the place of origin Willimau , in the former Duchy of Teschen. In blue on a green lawn ( nest ) stands a pelican with a golden beak and stand, feeding its three equally tinged young with its heart's blood. This depiction adorns the helmet gem in the same way . The “coat of arms can also be found in the Weigelian Wapenbuch , I. Th. Plate 76”.
