action

The spray plane Dusty working on a corn field and exercise during leisure time aerobatic maneuvers. Dusty also dreams of a career as a racing pilot, but Dusty's boss, Leadbottom, a double-decker agricultural aircraft, and Dottie, a forklift who is a mechanic and Dusty's friend, are not appreciated. Nevertheless, with the help of his friend Chug, he trains a tank truck for the "Wings around the Globe", the most famous and prestigious aircraft race in the world. The qualification, however, only just succeeds, which is why Dusty turns to the fighter plane Skipper Riley to receive good training from him.

During this training it turns out that Dusty suffers from a fear of heights. Nonetheless, the protagonist travels to New York after graduation to start the race. There he befriends the Mexican racing plane El Chupacabra, which in turn is in love with the German racing participant Heidi. Dusty, who had an unpleasant encounter with the multiple winner Ripslinger before the start, fell in love with the Indian Pan-Asian champion Ishani.

The subsequent race extends over seven stages. On the first leg from New York to Iceland, Dusty ranks last due to his refusal to ascend to high altitudes. During the second stage - with Germany as his goal - Dusty shows his sporty and fair side when he saved the race participant Bulldog from falling, the oil leaking into his eyes. Nevertheless, Dusty is the last to fly in again.

The third to fifth stages lead the racing community first to the Indian city of Agra, from there to Nepal and finally on to Shanghai. For the passage in India, the pan-Asian champion Ishani Dusty gives the tip to fly around the Taj Mahal (called “Garage Mahal” in the film). For the rest of the route through the Himalayas, the recommendation is to follow the "steel compass" alias the railway lines in order to fly low instead of ascending to the heights of the Himalayas. As a result, this advice turns out to be deliberate misinformation, as Dusty comes across tunnels that almost stop him. However, he can overcome these hurdles, takes first place in the overall lead and keeps it until Shanghai. There Dusty supports his new Mexican friend El Chupacabra in winning Heidi over with a romantic song.

For the sixth stage, which leads across the Pacific, Ned and Zed, Ripslinger's henchmen, sabotage Dusty's navigation antenna. As a result of this manipulation, he loses his orientation and, already short of fuel, comes across the aircraft carrier USS Flysenhower , on which he can make an emergency landing and refill his tank. There he also finds information about the war career of his short-term teacher, Skipper Riley, who has a reputation as a veteran of many missions - but who can actually only look back on one mission. With an approaching storm, Dusty can no longer linger on the aircraft carrier and has to take off. Dusty then falls into the sea in the storm, but is rescued and flown to Mexico with severe damage. There Skipper tells him the true story of why he only stayed on one mission: Skipper Riley had led trainees in an attack on the Japanese Navy, but was the only aircraft to return alive - and therefore felt massive guilt. In view of the seemingly hopeless situation due to the crash, Dusty is considering abandoning the race early. However, his friends, including the Bulldog he previously rescued, encourage him to keep going and are also donating spare parts.

The seventh and final stage leads back to the starting point in New York. The attempt by Ripslingers to literally shoot Dusty out of the running with his henchmen Ned and Zed ends unsuccessfully because skipper Riley, who has overcome his feelings of guilt and found it back in the air, interferes. In order to catch up with Risplinger, who is in the lead, in a dramatic finale, Dusty is forced to overcome his fear of heights and climb into the jet stream , strong winds in the upper troposphere. Shortly before the goal, Ripslinger reduces his speed in order to produce a good subject for the cameras. This, however, gives Dusty the opportunity to pass him and move in as the winner.

reception

On Kino.de , the film was already referred to as a "charming animation adventure" in the introduction to the article.

“With Planes, Disney is bringing a flying backup copy of Pixar's“ Cars ”to the cinemas without bringing in any ideas of its own. With the formulaic structure of the film and the clichéd characters, “Planes” makes no secret of the target audience they would like to attract to the cinema. For the youngest movie viewers, the adventure is entertaining fun, but for the adult companions the film becomes a test of patience. "

At the same time, opinion in Switzerland is divided, so there are also generally positive attitudes. The film is "all in all a successful animation fun", which "of course primarily appeals to the little fans", but should also include "slightly bigger Disney lovers" and the like. a. the "successfully staged car chases" have their joy.

“It should speak for itself when you mention that 'Planes' was actually intended as a pure DVD production. But due to the immense popularity of the 'Cars' franchise, the creators probably thought that you could earn a little more with a worldwide cinema release. Unfortunately, this means that a film can now be seen on the big screens that is immature in many respects. "

Elsewhere, the film was described as an “unimaginative, predictable spin-off to the“ Cars ”world, which uses and reinforces“ frivolously and thoughtlessly national stereotypes ”and thereby irritates the fact that Dusty does not understandably change in the course of the film and is different its spray-flyer existence. In addition, Planes presented "exactly the kind of listless banality that can regularly be found in the home theater market when successful cinema films are sold off prematurely and with little effort".

The reviewer of the Stuttgarter Nachrichten found the film “not very original” and the passage about the disclosure of Skipper's secret “really bizarre”, since the sequence with its “bombastic war film pathos not only seems strangely out of place”, but also “completely unsuitable for a children's film ”.

The online medium kinderfilmwelt.de , which specializes in children's films, also came to a negative value judgment: the machines would “leave the viewer pretty cold” because the computer animation film was unable to “really breathe life” into the aircraft. The story rushes "pretty hectically from one location to another", the locations are "at least as irrelevant in the end as the characters" and "just a few days after going to the cinema" nobody can remember Dusty.
