Popclub was one of Thomas Hermanns hosted Comedy - Celebrity - Game show all about music.

Two teams of three competed against each other, mostly women against men or mixed groups with different topic names. Each group first had to designate a team captain and present a battle cry. In addition, at the beginning of each program in the introductory round, each of the participating candidates showed their first record and presenter Thomas Hermanns was presented differently each time, always with a piece of music that he owned or a special experience with the music (e.g. “And here is the man who has an original autograph by Agnetha. ”). The concept of the show corresponds to its British model Never Mind the Buzzcocks .

Game flow

The competition began with the so-called buzzer round , in which Hermann described the band name or song title and the groups had to press the buzzer as quickly as possible and guess the term they were looking for. Examples:

10 points were awarded for each correct answer.

Alternatively, lie or truth was played in the first round , in which all candidates in turn had to decide once whether a statement is true or false. There were 5 points for each correct answer.

The second round was called Charts Charade . A team member had to mime song titles or band names within 60 seconds. 10 points were awarded for each correct answer given by the remaining candidates. Alternatively, pass on what you say was played in the second round . Instead of the pantomime, the selected team member had to rewrite the band or artist name within 60 seconds, without naming the title, humming or singing and without translating the name of the band or the title. There was also a list of 3–5 other expressions that could not be used for paraphrasing either. There were 5 points for each correct answer.

Well, a video clip was because it was just before the commercial break, each shown to the Hermanns a question asked (eg. B. As the clip is next? , Who is the artist? Or cover versions Who is the original artist? ). From season two, a street combo played a song and the title had to be guessed. The groups had to write their answer on a round cardboard disc and were not allowed to show it, since the viewer was asked the same question and could choose between two possible answers by phone call. Usually up to 100 CDs or a music system could be won.

After the commercial break, the answer was resolved and the teams received 10 points if the answer was correct.

There were two different variants for the third round:

  • Firstly, deep throat . In this case, too, one team member had to gargle or hum as many song melodies as possible within 60 seconds so that their fellow players could guess the song title. For each correctly guessed song gargled, there were 10 points, for each hummed song that was recognized correctly, there were 5 points.
  • The second variant was called killer karaoke . Here, too, a team member had to sing a new, freely invented text to a given melody that was not known to the candidate beforehand, as well as a given title. (For example, Shaham from Bro'Sis had to sing a song called I have time for girls to the tune of Ladies Night ( Kool & The Gang ) ). Audience applause was used to determine which of the two candidates received the higher number of points.

At the end there was a quick guessing round ( pop power ) in which all candidates had to answer questions one after the other, for which they had a maximum of 3 seconds. Each question was always based on the answer to the previous question. For each correct answer there were 5 points, after two rounds the game was over.

After each lap, Hermanns asked for the current score by pressing a buzzer. Here came Duran Duran Is There Something I Should Know ( "Please Please Tell Me Now").

At the end of the show, when Hermanns wanted to know the final score, the final countdown of Europe sounded when the buzzer was pressed . The respective winning team received the Golden Agnetha as a trophy (based on Hermann's ABBA favorite Agnetha Fältskog ). The losing team usually received a CD as a consolation prize. Thank You For The Music - also by ABBA - was recorded as the winning song .
