The Torneo México 70 was a special season of the Primera División , the highest Mexican soccer league. This was organized because of the soccer world championship in its own country in 1970 and took place in two phases. In the first phase, which took place between February 4, 1970 and May 10, 1970, the total of 16 participating teams were divided into two groups in which eight teams competed against each other in a home and away game. The four best-placed teams played in the second phase of the tournament in the championship round, the remaining eight teams in the consolation round. The second phase began after the World Cup, which began on May 31, 1970 and ended on June 21, 1970. It was held between July 8, 1970 and October 11, 1970.
While the national players appointed to the 1970 World Cup squad did not participate in the first phase of the Torneo México 70 due to the intensive World Cup preparation of the Mexican national team , they took part in the second phase.
Due to the expansion of the league from 16 to 18 teams in the future (from the 1970/71 season ) there was no relegated team at the end of this special tournament, but two promoted teams: the champions of the 1969/70 season in the second-rate Segunda División , CD Zacatepec , and the Puebla FC , which was able to prevail in a separately organized promotion round against the competitors Unión de Curtidores , Club Deportivo Nacional and Mastines de Naucalpan .
