background

Ronja Robber's Daughter is based on the novel of the same name by Astrid Lindgren . The series was directed by Gorō Miyazaki , the son of Hayao Miyazaki . The Japanese screenplay was written by Hiroyuki Kawasaki .

The series was produced by Studio Ghibli . Its founder, Hayao Miyazaki , tried to animate Pippi Longstocking back in 1971 . Astrid Lindgren , however, did not agree with a film adaptation. The series premiered on Japanese television from 2014 to 2015.

While Ghibli Studios used to publish hand-drawn films and series, Ronja the Robber's Daughter is computer animated via Computer Generated Imagery .

Miyazaki originally planned to make a film about the book Ronia the Robber 's Daughter. However, after reading the book, he found it too difficult to cover all facets of Ronja's life in one film and decided to produce a series. Many of the scenes in the series, including the forest scenes, are based on Miyazaki's experience as a landscape architect.

During the production of the film, the producers corresponded frequently with Astrid Lindgren's family. They wanted the film to be shot the way Lindgren wanted and tried to stay true to the original work. They researched medieval practices in Europe. At the same time, the Japanese origin of the series was always recognizable. Earlier Ghibli productions had a great influence on the design of the forest, the characters and the mystical creatures.

Ronja the Robber's Daughter has been translated into several languages. Astrid Lindgren's granddaughter Malin Billing supervised the translation into the Swedish version . She explained that it was important to Astrid Lindgren's family that the script matched the language mode of the novel and at the same time fit into the new format.

From the beginning, only one season was planned for the series. No further seasons should follow.

German publication

In Germany, the series was first published on Prime Video on January 27, 2017 . A publication on Netflix followed in September 2018 . The series was also released on DVD and Blu-Ray. For this purpose, the series was divided into four individual DVDs and Blu-Rays.

reception

criticism

Many critics praise the loyalty to Astrid Lindgren's work.

It is criticized that, unlike other Ghibli productions, the series is not hand-painted, but computer-animated and based on CGI . This would make the figures look smooth and impersonal.

Peter Lieb praises the loving implementation, which communicates how important family cohesion, courage and friendship are. The stories would delight parents and children alike.

Jpgames.de praises the "sensitive presentation of the more moving moments". "The tense relationship between Ronja and her stubborn father Mattis" provides "in the middle part of the series for extremely intense moments" that would not have been expected in this seriousness.

Manime.de thinks the selection of German voice actors for Ronja and Birk is good. These are still very young, which preserves the authenticity of the series.

Mobile.myreviewer.com believes the series is a wonderful children's adventure story that combines the realistic experiences of children with the myths and magical legends of Scandinavia. In addition, there are some important lessons for life, wrapped in an entertaining adventure story with very personable characters.
