Rupert Bergmann

Rupert Bergmann (born June 14, 1965 in Graz ) is an Austrian opera singer ( bass baritone ). His work focuses on contemporary music theater as well as operettas and musicals . He works primarily with Austrian and international stages and festivals and also works as an interpreter of songs .

Life

Rupert Bergmann received his education at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz (among others with Annemarie Zeller , Roberta Knie , Christian Pöppelreiter , Horst Zander and the conductor Wolfgang Schmid. Graduated with a diploma and master's degree), as well as with Wicus Slabbert and Walter Berry in Vienna. In 1990 he made his debut at the Graz Opera House and has since performed as an opera and concert singer in Europe, North and South America and Japan.

Since 1993 he has worked regularly with ARBOS - Society for Music and Theater . In 1995 he appeared for the first time in Vienna , where further debuts followed in the following years: Wiener Kammeroper (1998), Neue Oper Wien (1998), Volksoper Wien (2001), sirene Operntheater (2004) and Theater an der Wien ( 2006). In addition, he worked with festivals and independent opera producers in Austria: Langenlois Castle Festival, Lower Austrian Operetta Summer in Haindorf Castle (since 2003), Lehár Festival Bad Ischl (since 2005), Mörbisch Lake Festival (since 2013).

In 1993 he started working internationally in ARBOS productions: Prague , Theresienstadt ( Czech Republic ), National Arts Center Ottawa , Concordia University and Chapelle historique du Bon Pasteur in Montréal ( Canada ), Kulturhuset (Stockholm) in Sweden , United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC , the Holocaust Museum in Los Angeles (USA). In 1997 he also came to the 2days2nights of New Music festival in Odessa ( Ukraine ) with a project by ARBOS , where he made several guest appearances from 2007 with various solo programs and world premieres (2007, 2009, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018).

He has made guest appearances at the Staatstheater Schwerin (2002), at the Teatro de la Opera, San Juan, Puerto Rico (2004), at the Teatro Municipal de Santiago de Chile (2007), at the New National Theater Tokyo (2009, 2011) at the Prinzregententheater Munich (2012 ) and at the National Opera of Ukraine in Kiev (2018).

He has appeared several times at other festivals in Ukraine: at the first and only Don Bass New Music Art Festival Donetsk (2013), Kontraste Festival Lviv (2013, 2017) and Kiev Music Fest (2014).

Since 1998 he has regularly presented song programs (including Winterreise ) and contemporary programs in Vienna, Salzburg, New York ( Austrian Cultural Forum New York ), Boston ( Jordan Hall , St. Botolph Club ), Toronto, Nashua / New Hampshire, Santiago de Chile and Moscow. His programs include a. High Strings - Deep Voice (from 2010) and Made in Austria (2015) with his sister and violinist Katharina Radlberger, and bass baritone meets bass clarinet (INÖK project in Vienna 2015).

In 2017 he presented the program Flucht und Heimkehr with the accordionist Alfred Melichar on the Baden stage , which was dedicated to the Jewish composers Ernst Krenek , Viktor Ullmann , Karl Kohn (composer) and Ella Milch-Sheriff . In the same year he undertook a short tour in the Boston / USA area with the Ukrainian-American soprano Olga Lisovskaya with a program entitled A Musical Voyage from Vienna to Kiev , they were accompanied on the piano by Boris Fogel.

In 2018 he presented a cross-over program with the jazz singer Timna Brauer at the Baden stage under the title Is it love ...? with works from opera, operetta, musical, chason , klezmer and Wienerlied , accompanied by the Israeli jazz pianist Elias Meiri on the piano.

Over 70 roles are part of his repertoire, so u. a. the title role in Wozzeck (Vienna 2002), Frank / Die Fledermaus (Vienna 1999, Santiago de Chile 2007, Tokyo 2009), Kurwenal / Tristan und Isolde (Puerto Rico, 2004), Ollendorf / Der Bettelstudent ( Volksoper Vienna 2003, Bad Ischl 2005 ), Zsupán / Der Zigeunerbaron (Bad Ischl 2008, Langenlois Castle Festival 2015) and Tevje / Anatevka (Mörbisch 2014). He also took on this role at short notice in May 2015 in a new production by the Vereinigte Bühnen Bozen . In 2018 he made his debut as Il Malaspina in Luci Mie Traditrici by Salvatore Sciarrino at the National Opera of Ukraine in Kiev.,

In 2011 he realized Vogel Herzog Idiot , his own project with three mini-mono-operas written for him by Karmella Tsepkolenko, Samu Gryllus and Johanna Doderer in collaboration with the Theater an der Wien in the Vienna Chamber Opera

He worked u. a. with the directors Ruth Berghaus , Christian Boesch , Herbert Gantschacher , Philipp Harnoncourt , Robert Herzl , Kasper Holten , Peter Konwitschny , Gernot Kranner , Christof Loy , Marco Arturo Marelli , Leonard Prinsloo , Dolores Schmidinger , Michael Sturminger and Kristine Tornquist as well as the conductors Alexander Drcar , Marc Albrecht , Wolfgang Bozic , Rani Calderon , Dan Ettinger , Milan Horvat , Alexander Joel , Johannes Kalitzke , David Levi, Andreas Mitisek , Ulf Schirmer and Uwe Theimer .

In 2010 Bergmann founded the association MuPATh - music performance art theater with the Hungarian composer Samu Gryllus for the realization of their own music theater productions. So far, the projects Kollmi Szuszi and Vogel Herzog Idiot as well as smaller concert projects in Austria and Hungary have been realized.

In 2017 Bergmann founded the Ensemble Profundi together with bassoonist Robert Brunnlechner and pianist Tzveta Dimitrova , which is dedicated to the interpretation of contemporary and classical repertoire and has performed in Vienna and Mödling.

In the book Questions to the Music Theater (2012) by Edition Atelier , Rupert Bergmann answers a number of artistic and cultural-political questions.

In addition to his musical training, he studied business administration at the University of Graz between 1983 and 1992 with interruptions . He successfully completed the first part of his studies , the decision to pursue a career as an opera singer prevented him from completing the second part of his studies.

Rupert Bergmann lives in a partnership in Mödling near Vienna.
