history

The first videos on the channel in 2007 dealt with personal content from Smits that was related to his high school diploma . Many of them are no longer visible. On January 18, 2011, Smits began uploading self-created videos as a review of the year 2010 in the gaming sector.

The first Let's Play started on February 2, 2011 on YouTube. Smits and Hartwig can be heard here, delivering and commenting on game scenes for EVE Online . The remaining members of the PietSmiet team also joined the team over time and began recording videos and uploading them to the same channel. The members already knew each other through school or study time together and through leisure activities such as scouting.

Almost a year later, on February 23, 2012, the first video was uploaded to their second YouTube channel PietSmiet TV . This mainly contains videos about reactions and old videos from trips to developers and reports as well as reviews and tests on games. In addition, appear on the channel relays of the real-life - Pen - & - Paper -project " The Dark Eye ". There was also the PietSmiet kocht format , which has no relation to gaming or Let's Plays. This was moderated by Denis Hartwig.

The channel, the website and other media and facilities are managed by PietSmiet UG (limited liability) & Co. KG . The company's managing directors are Peter Smits and Dennis Brammen. Since March 2, 2013 the names PietSmiet , PietSmittie and Br4mm3n have been registered as trademarks of PietSmiet UG (limited liability) & Co. KG in the German Patent and Trademark Office (DPMA) for goods and services. Since May 2015 the u. a. PietSmiet Holding GmbH , managed by Slabs , which regulates the acquisition and management of company investments.

In addition to the YouTube channels, a Twitch channel has existed since September 2013 , on which live streams are started at irregular intervals. For this purpose, an interactive continuous stream was set up on February 25, 2014, which made it possible for viewers to control a streamed game by making entries in the chat area. This game was Pokémon ( Silver Edition ). This interactive play option existed continuously between the live streams accompanied by the team members, but was discontinued after a few weeks.

In 2013 PietSmiet was one of the most popular Let's Play channels in German-speaking countries alongside Gronkh .

On April 8, 2014, their third YouTube channel, Frag PietSmiet, was launched, on which viewers have the opportunity to have a question answered every day. Questions can be posted in the comments section of the last uploaded videos. The videos are simply rotated mobile phone videos that are kept very short and are therefore suitable for short entertainment. The questions (as well as other intros and voiceovers at PietSmiet) are read out by Dominik N. (known as Domi or DomiNoVox ), who has been managing the channel since July 2014.

The channel Best of PietSmiet went into operation on May 21, 2014 in order to transfer the best ofs that were previously published on PietSmiet TV to another channel. The channel is managed by Andreas L. (known as LeFauko ), who was known for his best ofs even before the official collaboration with PietSmiet.

In addition to a merchandise shop, PietSmiet has also been offering PCs in cooperation with One.de since the end of 2014.

During their visit to the British game fair GEEK, Smits and Stachelhaus started a podcast on February 18, 2015 with the PietCast . From the end of GEEK until December 22, 2017, it was published weekly.

With the help of Mikkel Robrahn (as editor-in-chief), the team and the topic of gaming have been working on expanding the website pietsmiet.de into an entertainment portal since mid-2015 .

On October 7, 2015 it was announced that Hartwig would no longer be part of PietSmiet and would instead devote himself to his own channel. The community reacted partly positively, partly negatively - but above all against Hartwig himself. Smits and Hartwig had emphasized in the video for # Aufbruch that there had been no quarrel, one parted in friendship. Smits also emphasized that the canal would be continued “naturally” despite Hartwig's departure. The audience shouldn't see it as the end of PietSmiet, but as an opportunity. As a result of the separation, the channel's longest project to date ended on October 10, 2015: Minecraft Adventure Maps , of which over 1,400 episodes have been uploaded in more than four years.

PietSmiet works with the 2nd Wave agency founded by Boris “Mister Gamescom” Lehfeld , which organizes collaborations with companies and also looks after other large German YouTubers such as LeFloid or Sarazar .

In March 2017, the Commission for Approval and Supervision objected to the Twitch channel PietSmietTV as a broadcast service requiring approval . The operators were given a period until the end of April of the same year to submit a corresponding application for approval. Otherwise the operation of the canal will be prohibited. At the beginning of May, the operators stopped broadcasting their programs on the Twitch channel until further notice. Since February 1, 2019, the PietSmietTV channel has been running around the clock on Twitch.

The Mexican Grand Prix in the 2019 Formula 1 season was broadcast live on Twitch by PietSmiet with its own commentary . It was the first official broadcast of its kind worldwide for a Formula 1 race.

From June 21 to June 25, 2016, PietSmiet held stage shows lasting several hours in Hamburg, Frankfurt am Main, Munich, Cologne and Berlin.
