Soběslav (German Sobieslau or Sobeslau , older also Schieslau ) is a city in the Czech Republic . It is 405 m above sea level. M. at the confluence of the rivers Lainsitz and Černovický potok 20 km south of Tábor . Soběslav covers an area of 1,998.58 hectares and has 7,308 inhabitants (January 1, 2004) , it belongs to the Okres Tábor .
history
In 1293 the place was first mentioned in writing, in 1390 Heinrich III. von Rosenberg of the settlement Stadtrechte. For the longest time Soběslav was owned by the Rosenbergs , who had many interesting buildings built.
In the summer of 1421 Soběslav was captured for the first time by the occupation troops of Ulrich II von Rosenberg , a second time in 1435, then it was burned down.
Attractions
- Early Gothic church of St. Peter and Paul (1493 to 1518) with a net vault over the preacher's chair and a valuable cellar vault and a 68 meter high tower.
- Church of St. Vitus (1374 to 1390), burned out in 1719 and rebuilt. One of the interesting monuments from the time of Wenceslas IV's reign .
- The cemetery church of St. Mark (1650), commissioned by the city's prime minister Zachariáš Marek Markovský, with an octagonal baroque chapel and a fresco depicting the Holy Trinity.
- Rosenberg Castle (Rožmberkský hrad), (second half of the 14th century), built by Henry III. from Rosenberg . The Bohemian King Wenceslaus IV was imprisoned in the castle for a while. The castle was partially destroyed during the Hussite Wars .
- Renaissance house on Republic Square (1564), where the Bohemian Brothers used to meet.
- Rosenberg House (Rožmberský dům) from the 15th century, Peter Wok von Rosenberg gave it to Zuzana Vojířová from Vacovice in 1609
