The sun GmbH (equity and shorthand: sun ) is a company in the energy industry based in Wildpoldsried in Oberallgäu . It produces battery storage for private households and small businesses . The company is considered the market leader in Germany and other international markets. It is also the center of a community for electricity supply from renewable energies .

On February 15, 2019, the takeover of Sonnen GmbH by the British-Dutch energy group Royal Dutch Shell with its subsidiary Shell New Energies became known. Regulators have yet to approve the takeover.

Development of the company

company

Christoph Ostermann and Torsten Stiefenhofer founded the company in 2010 as a GmbH . The full name of the company at that time was PROSOL Invest Deutschland GmbH . In December 2013 the shareholders' meeting decided to change the company name to Sonnenbatterie GmbH in order to include the name of their product range and to support the desired internationalization. The company has been operating as Sonnen GmbH since November 2015 . Sun serves as the umbrella term under which the individual activities of the company are located.

business development

From 2008 to 2010, founder Torsten Stiefenhofer in particular developed a home battery that was sold under the name sonnenBatterie from 2011 . As a solar battery , the product is particularly aimed at homeowners with a photovoltaic system . Eight generations of this power storage system had been developed and marketed by mid-2016. Germany is the main market for the devices. The company also sells the home batteries in Austria , Switzerland , Great Britain , Ireland , Slovakia , the Czech Republic , Italy , the Netherlands , Sweden , Norway , the United States and Australia (as of October 2016).

Together with the change of name to Sonnen GmbH , the company announced in November 2015 that it would set up its own electricity community from 2016 onwards, whose members exchange electricity with one another. Since September 2016, owners of a sonnenBatterie who are members of this electricity community have been able to obtain electricity at a flat rate .

At the beginning of May 2017, Tennet and Sonnen announced plans to use decentralized photovoltaic home storage systems via a blockchain solution to stabilize the power grid and to improve the grid integration of renewable energies. For Sonnen customers there will be a new source of income if they participate in this solution. Furthermore, the planned blockchain pilot project is a way to improve, simplify and increase the efficiency of the networking of battery storage systems, photovoltaic systems and power grids. Economically , with the help of this technology and a battery pool from Sonnen, the redispatch costs for stabilizing the power grid could be reduced.

Business areas

Power storage

The battery storage system is used to increase the rate of self-consumption of self-generated electricity. Without this, a self-consumption share of 30–55 percent can be achieved with a photovoltaic system, provided that smart home functions can be used. With a storage system, this value can be increased to 60 to 80 percent, because the self-generated electricity can be stored until it is used in-house. The need to buy electricity in the morning or in the evening is decreasing.

The company has designed the sonnenBatterie as a complete system since its market launch . In addition to the battery modules, it has an integrated inverter , a unit for energy management and electronic meters for power consumption in the building, for photovoltaic power generation and for supplying power to the power grid. The energy management system evaluates the user's consumption data and includes weather data in order to determine the optimal time periods for loading and unloading the storage tank. The sonnenBatterie can also be combined with heat pumps , wind turbines or block-type thermal power stations.

The storage elements used are lithium iron phosphate accumulators . Sony is the main supplier of this component. The different models of the system differ mainly in the nominal capacity , given in kilowatt hours . In Germany, Sonnen was one of the first providers of lithium-ion batteries for stationary use in private homes and is considered the market leader in Germany and globally . Distribution does not take place through wholesalers , but through selected specialist dealers. From 2011 to mid-October 2016, 15,000 devices were sold. Most of them went to homeowners, but also to farmers and small businesses.

Community

The company has been organizing the sonnenCommunity since the first quarter of 2016 . It is an electricity producer group made up of operators of photovoltaic systems (homeowners and small business owners) who share excess electricity with one another. In order to avoid any electricity deficits in times of low sunshine, biogas plants are also included. Small wind generator operators can also provide electricity to the community.

The community combines three elements: the use of decentralized energy generation , modern battery storage technology and the digital networking of the participants. The concept is aimed at Sonnen customers . Interested parties receive a discount on the sonnenBatterie from the company when they join the community. All members obtain electricity from the community for less than grid electricity. In addition, Sonnen takes over the sale of the excess community electricity for them.

The company hopes that the development and expansion of the community will increase sales of its sonnenBatterien . In addition, every community member pays a monthly fee to Sonnen . In turn, the company is responsible for the measurement infrastructure and software.

At the beginning of October 2016, the number of members was around 3,000 households. The development of the community in Austria began in May 2016. The start of the Swiss customer platform has been announced for the third quarter of 2016.

Since September 2016, owners of a sonnenBatterie who are members of this electricity community have been able to obtain electricity at a flat rate.

Shareholder

In addition to the founders, several financial investors are involved in the company (as of October 2016):

  • In January 2013, eCAPITAL entrepreneurial Partners AG acquired a stake of around 30 percent for 3 million euros .
  • The entry of Chrysalix SET Management BV ( SET Ventures ) and Munich Venture Partners took place the end of 2014 as part of a capital increase of EUR 7.5 million, on which eCAPITAL also participated.
  • In the middle of 2015, Inven Capital, investiční fond, as ., A subsidiary of the Czech energy company ČEZ , invested in the company with a high single-digit million amount.
  • In June 2016, the company acquired GE Ventures , General Electric's venture capital subsidiary , as a further investor.
  • In October 2016, Sonnen received another 76 million euros from its investors. The Chinese company Envision Energy and Thomas Pütter, formerly CEO and ex- chairman of Allianz Capital Partners , were added.
  • In the EUR 60 million financing round in May 2018, Shell Ventures joined Sonnen as a new investor, and in February 2019 it was announced that Sonnen GmbH had been taken over by Shell and is still awaiting approval from the antitrust authorities.

Management and staff

The founders managed the company until the end of 2014.

At the beginning of 2015, the management was newly appointed. Hermann Schweizer replaced Torsten Stiefenhofer. Since then, he has been performing the duties of the Chief Innovation Officer . At the same time, Oliver Koch added to the management; he had previously switched the individual production of the battery systems to series production.

In October 2015, Philipp Schröder moved from Tesla back to what was then Sonnenbatterie GmbH and is responsible for sales and marketing in the management . Six other Tesla managers followed him within a few months.

Steffen Schneider has been Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at Sonnen since July 2017. Before that, he was CFO at SFC Energy AG, a listed provider of hybrid power supply solutions. He is responsible for the areas of finance, controlling, investor relations, human resources and information technology (IT).

The number of employees increased by a factor of 20 from its foundation to summer 2016. In June 2016 it was 200, 140 of them were employed in Wildpoldsried. In September 2016 the number of employees totaled 250. In October 2017 the company had around 400 employees.

Locations

By the end of 2015, the company manufactured all battery storage systems in Wildpoldsried - for marketing under its own name and as a white label manufacturer for Solarworld and RWE . In 2015, the company established a production facility in San José, California . It has been producing for the American market since the end of 2015. In June 2015, the company established in Atlanta ( Georgia ) a location for research and development , a tune to its own products to the conditions of the US market. In November 2018, Sonnen opened its third production site worldwide in Adelaide, Australia.
