The Spielvereinigung Oberfranken Bayreuth from 1921 e. V. , commonly known as SpVgg Bayreuth , is a football club from Bayreuth .

The football department has been outsourced to Spielvereinigung Oberfranken Bayreuth 1921 Spielbetriebs GmbH since 2013 . In addition to the e. V., which according to the 50 + 1 rule must have at least 51 percent of the votes, two other shareholders are involved in the GmbH .

history

1921-1933

On July 23, 1921, the football department of TSV Bayreuth became independent as Tuspo Bayreuth-Altstadt . In 1925, the Free SpVgg Bayreuth-Altstadt , which joined the Workers' Gymnastics and Sports Association (ATSB), was split off again. In the course of the prohibition of this umbrella association after the so-called seizure of power, the association was dissolved in 1933. After the end of the Second World War, the SpVgg Bayreuth from 1921 e. V. , which also continues the popular nickname Oldschdod (in the local dialect for "old town").

1945–1990

In terms of sport, the first success was the promotion to the 2nd League South in 1959, in which the team played for three years. In 1969, the leap to the second division (at that time the Regionalliga Süd ) succeeded again , and after direct relegation and promotion, the SpVgg's most successful years began in 1971. The highlight was the second place in the 2nd Bundesliga South in 1979, which entitles them to participate in the promotion games to the Bundesliga . Here they failed with 1: 1 and 1: 2 at Bayer 05 Uerdingen .

Another highlight in the club's history will be remembered on January 12, 1980, when the DFB Cup won 1-0 over Bayern Munich , which won the German championship at the end of that season. Only in the quarterfinals (which had also been reached in 1977) the team was eliminated against FC Schalke 04 .

After the first year of the single-track Second Bundesliga, 1981/82 , the SpVgg had to relegate as bottom of the table in the Bayern League. Two more times, in 1985 and (after immediate relegation) in 1987, the return to the second division was celebrated. From 1988 to 1990 they were relegated three times in a row, but were allowed to stay in the class twice due to the non-issued licenses for Rot-Weiß Oberhausen and Kickers Offenbach before they left professional football.

1990-2013

Since then, SpVgg Bayreuth has even been relegated to the fifth-class national league twice . From 2001, however, they were back in the Bayern league. As the first in the table succeeded at the end of the 2004/05 season, promotion to the Regionalliga Süd. There the club took 10th place; however, the DFB refused the club due to the poor financial situation, the license for the 2006/07 season. President Heinz Wicklein was confirmed in office for two more years at the annual general meeting in March 2007, despite his statement made in autumn 2006 that he wanted to resign.

After all, SpVgg managed to qualify for participation in the DFB Cup for the first time in 15 years. In the first main round, however, the Bayreuth lost under the new coach Norbert Schlegel against the second division Kickers Offenbach with 0: 2.

In the 2007/08 season, the Bayreuthers managed the seventh Bavarian amateur championship three game days before the end of the series, making them level with FC Augsburg as record champions. In addition, the qualification for the new three-track regional league was achieved. The old towners did not receive the license for the regional league, however, because the admission complaints committee of the German Football Association refused the necessary license on June 11, 2008, which the DFB's court of arbitration confirmed on July 3, 2008. At the end of the 2010/11 season, the club was relegated from the Bayernliga to the Landesliga Nord and played in sixth class. In 2011/12, the SpVgg managed to return to the fifth-rate, but now two-pronged Bayern League, as fourth in their class - aided by the regional league reform .

From 2013

On May 8, 2013, the members of the SpVgg Bayreuth decided in a general meeting to spin off the first men's team to Spielvereinigung Oberfranken Bayreuth von 1921 Spielbetriebs GmbH, founded on June 26, 2013, and to expand the club's name to include the Bavarian administrative district of Upper Franconia to Spielvereinigung Oberfranken Bayreuth from 1921 e. V. Of the 116 members present, 104 voted in favor. The club holds 60 percent of the shares in the gaming company. The remaining 40 percent is shared by the family of the Weismain building contractor Alois Dechant and the tubular steel chair manufacturer Franz Stegner .

In 2014 they rose to the Regionalliga Bayern and reached 6th place straight away in the 2014/15 season.

The home games of SpVgg Oberfranken Bayreuth are mainly played in the Bayreuth Hans-Walter-Wild-Stadion . The stadium has had his name since 2002 and was named after the long-standing Mayor of Bayreuth , Hans Walter Wild (term of office from 1958 to 1988), who played a key role in the construction of the stadium as a great promoter of sport. In favor of the new sports facility, the Jakobshöhe stadium , which, as a pure football stadium, offered space for 10,000 visitors, has since been torn down .

Construction of the municipal Hans-Walter-Wild-Stadion began in 1967, and the main grandstand was inaugurated on May 23, 1974 with a friendly game between SpVgg and Kickers Offenbach . It is a multi-purpose stadium with athletics facilities, which, in addition to the central grandstand, offers a wide round with standing stands and a total capacity of 21,500 seats.

The last renovation of the sports facility took place in 2017 with the renovation of all athletics facilities. The installation of a floodlight system and the roofing of the back straight were discussed, but not yet implemented by 2018. So far the stadium has been sold out three times: in 1979 in the Bundesliga promotion match against Bayer 05 Uerdingen , in 1980 in the aforementioned cup match against FC Bayern Munich and in 1987 in the Bayern league match against TSV 1860 Munich .

SpVgg Bayreuth has a distinct fan scene. There are currently three fan clubs: Die Treuen , Altstadt Kult and Szene 1921 . The Bayreuth fans are considered creative and resourceful. Because of the impending bankruptcy, the fans auctioned themselves on the Internet at the end of 2008 and organized a “ghost game”. The most pronounced rivalry is with the supporters of SpVgg Bayern Hof , and individual supporters maintain fan friendships with fans of SpVgg Unterhaching , Tennis Borussia Berlin , SpVgg Greuther Fürth and FC Augsburg .
