Use of the Turkish flag

Waving Turkish flag

The use of the Turkish flag in public is subject to strict controls. Many Turks consider the flag to be "inviolable". Dirty, faded, tattered flags and flags with holes must not be used. The use of damaged flags or flags that do not meet the above specification will be punished and the owner will be asked to replace them with a new flag that meets the specification.

The national flag may not be used as an item of clothing. In 2001, eight shopkeepers were fined 250 million liras (around US $ 150 at the time) for selling T-shirts with the Turkish national flag. Non-governmental organizations such as parties, associations or clubs are not allowed to use the national flag in their symbols. An exception applies to a few sports clubs that are allowed to use the national symbols in the club crest. The denigration of the national flag in any form is prohibited.

The flag is also mentioned in Turkey's national anthem , the İstiklâl Marşı .

On November 10th, the anniversary of Kemal Ataturk's death , the national flag was raised at half-mast. The President of Turkey will determine further occasions. It has to blow constantly on state buildings, it also has to set public facilities. The raising and lowering of the flag must be carried out with a ceremony. The coffins of former presidents, martyrs and civilians and soldiers under certain conditions can be covered with the national flag, as can statues of Ataturk at unveiling ceremonies and tables at official swearing-in ceremonies.

history

Declaration of war by the Ottoman Empire on World War I on November 1, 1914

Historical flag books show a large number of different flag variants from the Ottoman period. The basic shape of the national flag was apparently changed in 1793 under Sultan Selim III. created when green flags used in shipping were changed to red, and the waning crescent moon and a multi-pointed star were added. The five-pointed star used today was established around 1844. This version was officially confirmed on June 5, 1936.

There are numerous legends about the origin. One of them is that an Ottoman sultan on his ride after a great battle won at dusk rides past a stream or a small lake, which was colored red by the blood of fallen Turkish soldiers. The moon (half moon) with a few stars was reflected in the water. This sight touched the Turkish ruler and this image was immortalized with the Turkish flag.

This flag has no official background, but is used by private individuals or as a catchy symbol in the media. In connection with the thesis of Eurabia , combinations of Turkish and European flags also appear. But these are mainly caricatures.
