action

Nadine Franklin is a 17-year-old eleventh grader from high school and lives in suburban Portland . She has a difficult relationship with her older brother Darian, a popular and attractive football player, and Nadine doesn't get along very well with her mother Mona, who is very important to her appearance. She only had a good rapport with her father Tom, who died of a heart attack four years ago . So Nadine's best friend Krista is her only caregiver.

One day Darian throws a pool party in the house, during which Nadine and Krista get drunk upstairs. Nadine falls asleep at some point, which is why Krista goes downstairs and talks to Darian. The next morning, Nadine sees Krista manually satisfying her brother in his bed , which puts a strain on their friendship. Darian and Krista meet again at school and he asks if they want to go out together. Nadine feels desperate and alone because of this, which is why she turns to her classmate Erwin Kim, a very good student and film geek , who raves about her, although Nadine actually goes to the slightly older student Nick Mossman, who was already in juvenile prison. feels attracted.

Darian invites Krista to a party, she insists that Nadine come along. At the party, Darian explains to Krista classmates why Nadine is alone again. Since she does not manage to get acquainted with other guests, she sits outside. When another visitor arrives and notes that she looks inferior to her brother, Nadine leaves. She invites Erwin to take her to an amusement park. There he wants to kiss her on the Ferris wheel , but Nadine refuses. Nevertheless, the two end their date, at the end of which Nadine claims that Erwin is a great person.

At school, Nadine is confronted by Krista who accuses her of ignoring her. Nadine replies that Darian is not really serious about her and that he doesn't care about her, which is why he will leave her sooner or later. Krista replies that she is now Darian's friend and that he has invited her to the prom, which will not take place for several months. Nadine asks Krista to choose between her or Darian, as Krista does not want this, Nadine feels betrayed by her and angrily ends her friendship.

Nadine finds a confidante in her history teacher Max Bruner. Although he ignores them at first because he doesn't seem to be interested in their problems, they understand each other better and better over time, which is expressed in their conversations , which are characterized by mutual sarcasm . She always goes to him when she has to talk to someone about her worries and anger, he meets her with humorous, snappy advice. Except for her conversations with Bruner, Nadine feels lonely because she is missing Krista. One night Erwin calls in Nadine, who hangs up. A short time later she calls him back and tells him to his enthusiasm that she will come to him soon because she wants to swim in his pool. Erwin Nadine finds out that he is from a rich family and he's cartoons turns. She agrees when he suggests that he go to her school's short film festival with him.

As Mona drives Nadine to school, they get into a heated argument in the car, which leads to Mona taking Nadine to work without further ado. There Nadine becomes insufferable from boredom when she talks about her deceased father with Mona, who often has appointments with rather questionable suitors, her mother claims that he is extremely disappointed with Nadine's development. Nadine is so angry about this that she steals her mother's car keys and drives them away. In a playground she writes an extremely lewd SMS to Nick and then wants to delete it, but accidentally sends it.

Thereupon Nadine rushes to Bruner in horror, claims that she wants to kill herself because of the text message, and asks him for help, but he only gives her some money for a frozen yogurt . To her surprise and delight, Nadine receives a message from Nick, who invites her on a date. She goes home, gets ready and leaves before Mona comes home. When she can't find Nadine, she calls Darian, which is why he starts looking for his sister. Meanwhile, Nadine and Nick kiss in his car, trying several times to encourage them to have sex, but instead Nadine wants to get to know him better, which he is not interested in. Nadine leaves disappointed and sad and calls Bruner, who takes her to his home, where she meets his wife Greer and her baby and sees a happy family for the first time in a long time. Darian and Krista are soon at the door and want to bring Nadine home, but she doesn't want to go with them. In an argument, Darian confesses that he feels pressured and trapped because he has to take care of the family instead of her dead father, has only looked at nearby colleges and Krista is the only person who makes him happy . Nadine, in turn, admits that she was plagued by extreme insecurities and self-hatred from an early age, which she projected onto her apparently perfect brother and mother's darling through envy. The siblings hug and end their long-standing argument.

When Nadine makes her way to the film festival a little later, she meets Darian and Krista. She also gets along with the latter, then it occurs to her that Mona is still worried about her, which is why she texts her in a text message that she is fine and that her mother decides to believe her daughter's words. Erwin's production, which is about an alien who falls in love with a girl in high school but is rejected, is shown at the film festival . Nadine apologizes to Erwin for her long hesitation and confesses her love to him. Erwin receives congratulations for the successful premiere from the other filmmakers whom he introduces Nadine. She smiles and is finally able to open up to others.

production

Kelly Fremon Craig sent her script, titled Besties , to James L. Brooks back in 2011 in the hope of winning him over as a producer. Brooks said yes, but suggested that she rewrite the plot, after which Craig should think about what she wanted to say about life with the story. Craig eventually changed the script, which had previously focused almost entirely on the comic aspects of the plot and Nadine's friendship with Krista.

Pre-production began four years later . Craig not only wrote the script, but also directed a film for the first time. On August 4th, 2015, Hailee Steinfeld was cast in the lead role, on September 24th Woody Harrelson and Kyra Sedgwick as Mr. Bruner and Mona, and finally Blake Jenner in the role of Darian on October 6th .

Shooting started on October 21, 2015 in Vancouver , other locations were Anaheim , Metro Vancouver , the local high school and downtown Surrey, and Port Moody , where the scenes at the short film festival were shot. The last day of shooting was December 3rd.

publication

The film grossed $ 19.4 million at a production cost of $ 9 million, of which 14.4 million were viewers in the United States and Canada.

In North America, the production came to theaters at the same time as Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, and nationwide releases of Moonlight and Billy Lynn's Crazy Heroes Tour . According to initial predictions, it should gross around eight million dollars on screenings in 1900 cinemas on the opening weekend. However, since he had made only $ 1.8 million after the first day, the estimate was lowered to four to five million dollars. After the first weekend, it finally grossed $ 4.8 million and was the seventh most viewed film on the continent.

reception

In the Internet Movie Database, the film achieved a rating of 7.3 out of ten stars based on 95,628 votes. On Rotten Tomatoes , the critic rating is 94 percent based on 207 reviews, the audience rating is 83 percent based on 27,286 votes cast. On Metacritic there was a critic rating of 77 out of 100 based on 38 reviews and a viewer rating of 7.7 out of ten based on 206 votes cast.

Jon Frosch wrote in The Hollywood Reporter that the production takes the risk of being open and honest about what pays off. The Edge of Seventeen is much less “mischievous, pretentious and sharp-edged” than modern films of the genre. Instead, he lives from “brisk humor and sharp-sighted empathy” for the lovable, rough protagonist. The plot does not shamelessly make fun of their routine, youthful crises, nor treat them with "jingling seriousness". The film will probably not be received with open arms by John Hughes nostalgics, but Nadine is a direct descendant of his characters like Samantha from That is only allowed as an adult , as she is also full of insecurities and hostility, "pathologically self-critical" and much more attractive be as she wants to admit. Nadine's relationships with her two possible suitors are credibly portrayed, as is her relationship with her teacher, Mr. Bruner, whom Woody Harrelson depicts with the usual precise comedic timing. Kelly Fremon Craig doesn't try anything big or visually bold, but that's okay because she knows how to keep the plot going, and the dialogues never seem “feverishly hip” or focused purely on the target group. The strength of the film lies in how seriously it takes the characters' problems and their fragile emotions, even if it “hairdos” them for delicate gags and leads them to predictable solutions. Hailee Steinfeld vividly portrays Nadine's mood swings, changing bonds and her kindness of heart, even if it is not always easy to like her figure. However, in the end Nadine would not suddenly turn into a treasure, but would have developed personally and, like the film itself, earned the respect of the audience.

Justin Chang wrote in the Los Angeles Times that the film was an "unexpected win" and a rare coming-of-age production that felt less like a makeover than a restoration. The film is "disarmingly clever, funny and caring" from start to finish. The “funny bars” are mostly well known, but the action takes place in a “distinctly intimate, emotional tone of voice”. In the venerable tradition of teen comedies by directors John Hughes and Cameron Crowe, and in the "warm comedic spirit" of producer James L. Brooks , Craig sees the inner workings of her main character not as "junk for gags" but as something that should be treated with warmth and delicacy and without condescension. The subplot with Erwin is charming, Nadine's dry conversations with Bruner are one of the pleasures of the film. Nadine's frequent jokes had a "wonderfully unfiltered sexual openness," but even her most sneering remarks were plausible in contrast to the dialogues in Juno . Steinfeld delivered her best performance in the film since True Grit , she managed the difficult task of being both snappy and charismatic. In his role, Harrelson would give the stereotype of the understanding teacher an "upset turn". The production would readjust Nadine's bad opinion of herself with a calm and patient hand, and not ignore the other characters either. Craig expands grace and understanding in all directions, skillfully transforming conflict into a series of small but significant nervous breakdowns in Act III. Above all, Kyra Sedgwick stands out as a frustrated, leaderless mother. Chang closed his review by saying that The Edge of Seventeen would touch anyone who grew up in dysfunctional families.

According to Time's Stephanie Zacharek, nobody would get away with it in Craig's “radiantly funny and astute debut”, especially not the protagonist Nadine. There are misconduct and misunderstandings in many places, especially with regard to Nadine, who behaves grumpy, impatient, disapproving, constantly angry and self-centered and often verbally attacks others, which is why you would like to "shake" her as a viewer. But that doesn't make them unsympathetic, but believable. Craig doesn't flinch at Nadine's "thorniness", as her condescending manner towards the "super smart and super cute" Erwin is portrayed exactly. Nadine is terrible, but the more terrible her behavior, the more one feels for her as a spectator, which is mainly due to Steinfeld's performance: She is a thundercloud pounding around in " sneakers " and yet promising. Even if her behavior was inexcusable, glimmers of the person she was developing into would emerge. The film is particularly astute in its portrait of teenage sex. In a certain way, The Edge of Seventeen seems like a typical coming-of-age production, but that's only because many ways of growing up are banal and predictable. Craig and her wonderful actors have refreshed the genre: Although the basic plot looks familiar, it also hits frank, nuanced tones. Nadine thinks she is both the "center of the earth" and worthless. Her finest hour is when she breaks with both ways of thinking. Only then is it at the limit and at the beginning of everything.

Vox's Alissa Wilkinson rated the film four stars out of five. According to her, The Edge of Seventeen continued the new trend of the 2010s such as Easy to Have Adults in teen comedies portrayed as cool, considerate and responsible, which is not only refreshing and interesting, but also makes the teen characters more complex let. The film is delightful and honest, and it has a "mature soul". It starts off like a typical teenage comedy, but reveals surprising depth and turns tropes upside down. None of the characters is what one would expect from such types of characters, not even Erwin, who due to his Korean origins and the associated good grades and identity as a geek initially seems stereotypical , which is later surprisingly twisted. All characters have an astonishing aspect, which in retrospect turns out to be completely realistic. As in My Mad Fat Diary , the main character's vulnerability would be hidden behind antipathy, and both productions would have a strong sense of the inner conflict of young people. There is also something in common with Sing Street , as both would take the realistic problems of adolescents seriously in a relaxed manner without being patronizing. The film was also an entertaining comedy, Steinfeld played the "uncompromising naivety" of the main character in a credible way. Wilkinson also praised the fact that Nadine ultimately gets together with Erwin, who is Asian-American, which is still rare. The film is the opposite of a fantasy reality or "caustic adult farce". It is good that The Edge of Seventeen shows both the positive and negative sides of growing up.
