The 9th stage of the Tour de France 2017 took place on July 9, 2017. It led over 181.5 kilometers from Nantua to Chambéry . There was an intermediate sprint in Massignieu-de-Rives after 126.5 kilometers as well as a mountain classification of the 4th, two mountain ratings of the 3rd, a mountain classification of the 2nd category and three mountain ratings of the "Hors Catégorie".
The winner of the stage was Rigoberto Urán in the sprint of a top group of six in the photo finish ahead of Warren Barguil . Barguil, who was part of a 40-man breakaway group that had formed after 3.5 kilometers, was overtaken 11 kilometers from the finish by Romain Bardet , who pulled away from the group of favorites on the last descent. Bardet was again overtaken by the pursuers two kilometers from the target. The sprint winner Uran was unable to change the gear ratio in the finals due to a faulty circuit. Chris Froome defended his yellow jersey as third of the day .
The stage was overshadowed by numerous falls as a result of which several riders had to give up the race, including co-favorite Richie Porte , who fell on the last descent and the winner of the first stage Geraint Thomas . Seven drivers were taken out of the race because the waiting period was exceeded , including the winner of the 4th stage Arnaud Démare with three team helpers who tried in vain to prevent him from being eliminated. A total of twelve drivers were eliminated. In addition, Rafał Majka came the next day , who finished the stage after a fall, but did not start the tenth stage .
