history
Rabenstein was first mentioned in 1136 in connection with Wilhelm von Ramingstein, who belonged to the Babenberg family. The place laid out below the castle played an important role as a mansion in the settlement of the Pielach valley in the 12th century . Rabenstein first appeared as a “market” as early as 1280, making it the oldest place in the Pielach Valley. In 1683, when the Turks invaded, Rabenstein Castle was besieged for a month, but it could not be captured.
coat of arms
Although Rabenstein is the oldest market in the Pielachtal, it was not until 1983 that the right to use a market coat of arms was granted. The market was initially under the leadership of the Ramingstein family, so it was not necessary to give privileges to the rights of the market. So until 1848 the market had neither a seal nor a coat of arms. It was only after the free market town of Rabenstein was constituted in 1854 that “a raven sitting on a rock” was included in the seal by the town council.
politics
Kurt Wittmann has been the mayor of the market town since 2000, Hubert Gansch has been vice mayor (since 2012) and Gottfried Auer is the head of the office. In the municipal council of the Climate Alliance and FAIRTRADE market municipality, there will be the following distribution of mandates after the 2020 municipal council election with a total of 21 seats: ÖVP 16, SPÖ 5.
