The 3rd U-16 World Cup took place in Scotland from June 10 to 24, 1989 . The defending champion was the national team of the Soviet Union , which could not qualify for this tournament. The new title holder was the national team of Saudi Arabia .

From the German-speaking area, only the selection of the GDR under coach Eberhard Vogel qualified for the tournament. She was the winner of Group B in the preliminary round, but was eliminated in the quarter-finals against Scotland just 1-0. Some of the selection players later played in renowned Bundesliga clubs.
