UBM Arkadia Traiskirchen Lions ( UBM is the abbreviation for the traditional name UKJ Basketballclub Möllersdorf , where UKJ stands for Union Catholic Youth ) is an Austrian basketball team from Traiskirchen that was founded in 1966 under the name UKJ Möllersdorf . The team has had its current name since the 1999/00 season. Common abbreviations are Traiskirchen Lions , or just the Lions (after the heraldic animal and mascot). The club has been playing in the top Austrian division, the Bundesliga, without interruption since the 1983/84 season . The Lions' greatest successes include three championship titles and three cup wins . Arkadia Traiskirchen also took part in the Korać Cup eight times .
history
1960s, 1970s
On October 24, 1966, the association was founded under the name UKJ Möllersdorf by the Möllersdorf pastor Friedrich Tscherney. Right from the start, Möllersdorf paid great attention to the next generation. At the beginning, the men's team consisted of a few players from Möllersdorf, so in 1968 players from the UKJ Wien-Land played for Möllersdorf. The boys (U12) achieved the first Lower Austrian championship title in the club's history in 1971. In the same year, the syndicate with UKJ Wien Land was ended. In 1973 the men's team was promoted to 1st class. Möllersdorf achieved great successes in the young talent this year, the club achieved 4 championship titles in five age groups in which it participated. In 1977 Möllersdorf moved into the new hall of the local secondary school. A year later UKJ Möllersdorf became national champion and rose to the B-Bundesliga . It was only a short-term success, because one season later they were relegated. In 1979 the men made it to the semi-finals of the cup competition for the first time , and the second men's team rose to first class that same season.
1980s and 1990s
In 1982 the men were again national champions , but failed because of the promotion games for the B-Bundesliga. In 1982 a partner association was founded with the neighbor from Tribuswinkel , which was called UBMT (connection between UKJ Möllersdorf and UBB Tribuswinkel). In the 1982/83 season, the club became national champions and took a vacant place in the A-Bundesliga. As of this season, the club had an A-League team without ever winning the B-League, which is unique for the Austrian Bundesliga. Franz Graf acted as player-coach from 1983. In the same season, the juniors (U18) won the first state championship in the history of UKJ Möllersdorf. Phil Wagner, the first legionnaire in the club's history, was signed for the A-League team. In 1985 legionnaire Renaldo O'Neal came to Möllersdorf. The coach was Michael Sturmayr, with whom UBMT reached 5th place in the Bundesliga in the next season (1986/87), the best placement in history. In the national league, the second men's team (UBMT II) was national champion before the third men's team (UBMT III). In 1989 Renaldo O'Neal became player-coach of the Bundesliga team, and a year later UBMT played the first international matches in the Korać Cup, with Murat Ersek as the new coach. In the same year, the club ended the syndicate with Tribuswinkel.
In 1991 UKJ Möllersdorf won the A-Bundesliga championship, with newcomer Oto Matický playing a key role in this success . A year later, Lucas Hajda returned to Möllersdorf, who rose to the team's top performers and was able to celebrate the runner-up title with the team. Pastor Friedrich Tscherney was replaced as chairman in 1992, the new chairman was Helmut Niederhofer , who held the office until 2016. The next year, a new coach came with Craig Nance. In 1994 Möllersdorf lost in the first cup final against St. Pölten, but the club was compensated in the championship with the second championship title in the club's history. In 1994/95, the assistant coach of Craig Nance, Franz Zderadicka, was the coach of Möllersdorfer and failed in the cup final at Oberwart. In the championship, the team reached the runner-up title, the juniors became national champions. The following year the team was again runner-up and cup finalist. In 1997 the team achieved their first cup win. Scott Fields became the new trainer in 1999, and the LZ Lower Austria South was founded among the younger generation.

In the 1999/00 season the new hall, the Lions Dome, was opened and the name UKJ Möllersdorf was changed. From then on the club was called UKJ Basketballclub Möllersdorf Arkadia Traiskirchen (short form UBM Arkadia Traiskirchen Lions). Charles Payton became the new coach, and the greatest success in club history was celebrated, becoming both champions and cup winners. Also in 2001, a new coach for the youngsters, Zoran Kostic, was hired . In the year 2000/01 the Lions became cup winners for the third time, but in the Bundesliga they only reached sixth place, the U22 became national champions. 2001/02 was able to prevent the team from relegation, a discarded three of a player from Oberwart brought Traiskirchen relegation. In the Cup, however, Traiskirchen only failed in the final against the Gmunden Swans. The top performers of recent years, Markus Fritz and Oto Maticky, ended their careers in the 2002/03 season, and Raoul Korner became the new head coach of the Lions this season, in addition the ex-NBA player Acie Earl was signed, but only four times played for the Lions. In the 2004/05 season UBM Traiskirchen was 7th in the Bundesliga and won the national championship title in the U22. A year later, Andrea Maghelli was hired as the new coach and reached the cup finals and the semi-finals of the championship with the young team around MVAP player Davor Lamesic , the U22 team was national champion as in the year before. 2006/07 the Lions were 7th in the championship after several victories against top clubs and just missed qualifying for the playoffs. The U14, the U20 and the U22 became national champions for the third time in a row. In 2007/08, the Bundesliga team was eliminated from the championship in the quarter-finals against Kapfenberg, although the team was still fourth in the regular season. The U22 team won their fourth title in a row this season. In 2008/09, the Traiskirchner team, reinforced by Deven Mitchell, who was elected MVP of the season, made it to the semi-finals of the playoffs, where they failed to Gmunden. The U22 failed in the final by only one point to win the fifth title in a row and was therefore vice state champion. In 2009/10 the Lions were again 5th and failed in the semifinals against Fürstenfeld.
Since 2010
In their most successful season since winning the championship title in 2000, the team reached third place in 2010/11 and narrowly missed the final qualification in the fifth game of the semi-final series against eventual champions Oberwart. Fabricio Vay played a key role in this success as Player of the Year. In the following season, due to austerity measures and many departures, the successes of previous years could not be followed and therefore did not reach the top playoff for the first time since the 2006/07 season. The 2013/14 season, in which the team had the future NBA player Jakob Pöltl in their ranks, was certainly the highlight of the non-playoff period .
In the 2014/15 season they reached eighth place after the basic round. In the playoff, however, they just failed at BC Vienna (2: 3). A year later they could repeat the good performances from the previous year and move into the playoff without problems. There they failed only in the semifinals in the decisive fifth game at WBC Wels. The 2016/17 season was marked by the change of coach from Georgi Mladenov to Luigi Gresta. The team could never find a rhythm, but still reached the playoff round with sixth place. In the quarter-finals, however, it was over against the eventual champions Kapfenberg.
In the summer of 2017, the long-time chairman Niederhofer, who most recently held the position of sports director, resigned after 46 years of club activity. In December 2019, the team split up with immediate effect from coach Zoran Kostic for “disciplinary reasons”, and the previous youth coach Markus Pinezich became his successor.

It holds around 1200 spectators and can be divided into two parts in the middle by a lowerable wall. The Arkadia Traiskirchen Lions have been playing in it since 1999. The lower tiers can be retracted and extended, which enables a division into two playing fields, so that tournaments with two simultaneous matches can be held. There is space for around 700 people on the upper, permanently installed tiers. In addition, there is a corridor above the stands with additional standing options. This corridor also gives access to the buffet, to the smoking terrace, as there is no smoking in the hall, and to the VIP area, which is equipped with windows with a view of the playing field.
