UIC marking of the locomotives

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Since the beginning of 2007, all newly registered rail vehicles in Germany have been given a twelve-digit number, which makes a locomotive clearly identifiable in an EU-wide vehicle configuration register and largely follows UIC leaflet 438-3 for the identification of traction vehicles . A complete register number consists of 12 digits. The first two digits represent a type code, the third and fourth code, as with the wagon numbers , the country of origin. The digits five to eleven can be freely defined by the respective country, the twelfth represents a check digit. This is followed by a country code and the code of the vehicle owner.

As of August 1, 2008, all vehicles in the vehicle must be entered in the register and given their registration number. Existing operator-internal markings of the vehicles remain unaffected.

National bloc

Germany

In Germany , the Federal Railway Authority introduced the national vehicle registration register . The EBA is also responsible for assigning vehicle registration numbers. The nationally individually assignable part of this number (5th – 11th digits) consists of a four-digit series number and the associated three-digit serial number of the vehicle in this series.

In order to simplify the redrawing for Deutsche Bahn , the first of the four digits was chosen when choosing the series number for existing DB vehicles so that the number from the previous DB series scheme can be used without changing the check digit. An adjustment of this control number was only necessary for the DB's internal combustion railcars. This does not apply to new DB vehicles , such as the Alstom 1214 series machines that were first used by DB in 2008 . Although it is classified internally as a series 262, it was given a registration number corresponding to the series requested by the manufacturer.

Due to the obligation to enter the vehicle register, vehicles and series are also recorded that were never used by a German state railway administration. These are assigned a new series number by the EBA, which is no longer based on the historical allocation system of Deutsche Bahn. This leads to misunderstandings for railway enthusiasts, since the series designations are now generally four-digit and no longer allow any conclusions to be drawn about the type of vehicle: The content of the first two digits, i.e. the type code, is also required.

Example :

If you tried to read a classic DB class number from the last three digits, the existing “0128” class would lead to an electric locomotive. Since this series is in the context of the type code "98", it designates a shunting diesel locomotive. The form previously used by Deutsche Bahn for this with the three-digit series designation “3xy” or “2xy” can no longer be found in the new series number. The classic allocation numbers are therefore obsolete and can only be found in the register numbers of former state railway vehicles.

Vehicles that are used by both DB and NE railways are in the same series. The distinction can be made at any time using the holder abbreviation. One advantage of the system is that it is easy to change the owner because the vehicle can keep its registration number. There is only an adaptation of the abbreviation. In the case of a far-reaching conversion, however, it may be necessary to change the actual number to a more suitable series.

Check digit

In order to identify incorrect vehicle numbers, there is a check digit in the 12th position at the end of the UIC number , which is generated with the Luhn algorithm . When entering data on the computer, a plausibility check can be carried out using the check digit.

Vehicle owner identification

A Europe-wide unique identifier is required for every RU that enters vehicles in the vehicle register. This is requested from the Federal Railway Authority and is part of the number given. The list of holder IDs can be found on the website of the European Rail Agency .
