Volkstedt is a district of the city of Rudolstadt in the district of Saalfeld-Rudolstadt in Thuringia on the Thuringian Porcelain Route .

geography

The district is located southwest of the core city of Rudolstadt between the federal highway 88 and the federal railway line Berlin - Munich in the Saale valley . To the south, Schwarza then immediately adjoins the district.

history

The first documentary mention of the village of Volkstedt took place as early as 842–856. Volkstedt, derived from the old German nickname Volko and called Volk'scht in dialect, is one of the eleven districts of Rudolstadt and was incorporated in 1921. It is located southwest of the city center on the Saaleknie.

Volkstedt is particularly known for its porcelain , especially the Aelteste Volkstedter Porzellanmanufaktur , which has been producing since the 18th century and partly under Christian Nonne .

Friedrich Schiller lived briefly in Volkstedt in 1788 and found the inspiration for his poem The Glocke here . A plaque above the entrance door to the rectory reminds us that Schiller lived in the previous building.

Until 1918 the place belonged to the sovereignty of the Principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt .

At the end of the Second World War - in addition to the neighboring town of Saalfeld (April 9, 1945) - Volkstedt was also the victim of a bomb attack by American planes on April 10, 1945, and 60 percent of it was destroyed. 35 people were killed. That was three days before the US ground forces marched in . At the beginning of July 1945 Volkstedt, like all of Thuringia, was handed over by the Americans to the Red Army . This made it part of the Soviet occupation zone and, from 1949, of the GDR .

church

The Volkstedt village church was built in the 12th century, rebuilt in the 18th century, renewed in 1938, destroyed by bombing on April 10, 1945, rebuilt in 1949/50 (the tower later) and thoroughly restored after the fall of the Wall .

graveyard

In the cemetery there is a long series of representative, historical grave monuments of wealthy von Volkstedt families.

A common grave site in the cemetery or memory of the 35 bomb victims from April 10, 1945 is missing.
