Bus transport in the Würzburg area
The bus and coach transport in the Würzburg area is next to the railway and tramway traffic of the three products of public transport in traffic group Main Franconia .
The city bus network currently consists of 27 lines that serve the Würzburg city area and the suburbs of Gerbrunn , Güntersleben , Höchberg , Margetshöchheim , Randersacker , Reichenberg , Veitshöchheim and Zell (Main) . These are mainly driven by the Omnibus-Betriebsgesellschaft (NVG), a formerly independent company that is now majority owned by Würzburger Straßenbahn GmbH (WSB). The WSB has gradually withdrawn from bus transport in recent years and would like to concentrate mainly on tram traffic in the future. 12 percent of the NVG are still privately owned by Gerhard Wagner, a lawyer from Würzburg. His wife Sabine Warmke-Wagner is one of two managing directors. The second managing director, Rudolf Albert, has been appointed by WSB.
Another 25 lines serve the rest of the district and some go beyond that. Of these 25 regional lines , eight belong to Omnibusverkehr Franken (OVF), based in Nuremberg, and two to Regional Bus Stuttgart (RBS); the remaining transports are largely carried out by private local transport companies from the region. The central transfer point where all regional bus routes and most of the city bus routes converge is the bus station at the main train station . Two other larger transfer stations are the Sanderring stops at the southern end of the trunk line and Reuterstraße in the Heidingsfeld district.

vehicles
Since the Würzburger Straßenbahn GmbH has made extensive investments in the past few years to rejuvenate the bus fleet, it now largely consists of low-floor vehicles. Between 2000 and 2004 alone, 21 new articulated and solo buses were purchased from MAN, ten EvoBus or Mercedes-Benz buses (some from the Citaro series) were built in 1998, and a further eleven vehicles are older. The latest additions are two MAN midibuses, which have replaced the old Kowex midibuses on route 9 since January 2006. Due to the transfer of bus operations to NVG, WSB will no longer procure new vehicles in the future.
The Omnibus-Betriebsgesellschaft (NVG) also has mostly modern vehicle equipment, including 26 MAN low-floor buses and six Citaro solo cars from EvoBus. Since 2005, a total of 17 articulated and solo buses from the new MAN “Lion's City” series have been procured which, in addition to being handicapped-accessible, also meet the Euro 4 emissions standard. In the years 2009–2011 vehicles from the manufacturers MAN (2009, 2010) and Mercedes-Benz (2009, 2011) were procured.
In addition, there are also some private operators who are otherwise primarily focused on regional bus operations in urban transport, such as the companies Ditterich, Amrehn and Franz Heim, which mostly use buses from MAN and Setra.

These lines are mainly operated by private bus companies from the region (e.g., Alka Reisen, Schraud, Ditterich, and many others). The private operators mostly use low-floor and high-floor buses from the Setra MultiClass, which was specially designed for intercity transport. There are also numerous vehicles from MAN and Neoplan, as well as the rural-service version of the Citaro.
Lines of Omnibusverkehr Franken
Omnibusverkehr Franken GmbH, which was founded in 1988 as a subsidiary of the Deutsche Bundesbahn and today - just like Regionalbus Stuttgart GmbH - belongs to Deutsche Bahn AG, is the largest regional bus company in Bavaria and today has 258 of its own bus vehicles, 700 employees and 290 lines in sub , medium and low-traffic Upper Franconia . In the Würzburg area, the Nuremberg-based company operates ten lines that mainly connect the remote parts of the district and sometimes also places outside the district with the regional center of Würzburg. Some lines also serve - as former rail buses - the parallel and replacement rail traffic.
- Line 8065: Würzburg bus station - Veitshöchheim - Thüngersheim - Karlstadt
- Line 8068 : Würzburg bus station - Margetshöchheim - Erlabrunn - Zellingen - Karlstadt

- Line 8162: Würzburg bus station - Bergtheim - Opferbaum - ( Bad Neustadt )
- Line 8163: Würzburg bus station - Seligenstadt (- Volkach - Ebrach)
OVF uses these routes mainly with Setra and MAN intercity buses, which are held in the Gemünden (Main) depot. Most of the vehicles already have modern low-floor technology, but OVF also owns high-floor buses with stepped access. Since 2004 the OVF has also owned some MAN NÜ 313 CNG natural gas buses financially supported by the Free State of Bavaria . Buses from subcontractors are also used on the lines.
Bus station hub
The bus station is located in the immediate vicinity of the main train station and is the central transfer point between city and regional bus routes . It is divided into several areas:
- Bus station - platform 1-7 and platform A
- Most of the lines stop at platforms 1-7 and A. This is where mainly the NVG buses stop, which serve the urban area and some of the surrounding communities. The bus platforms are arranged at an angle and are usually assigned to two or three lines. In terms of length, however, they are not suitable for two articulated buses holding one behind the other, nor do they offer sufficient space and barrier-free boarding heights. Since autumn 2008, this part of the bus station has been equipped with DFI driving displays .
- Bus station - platform 8-14 and the bus stop "City Tour"
- At platforms 8–13, there are mainly regional buses with destinations in the entire district and beyond. The OVF and RBS buses also stop here . The bus platforms are arranged parallel to the west wing of the station building at the height of the post office building. The bus platforms themselves are very long so that several buses can stop one behind the other. Buses that are not currently needed are often parked here. Bus platform 14 is currently only served by rail replacement services. The boarding stop for the city tour is connected to the station square. Here, too, there are no prerequisites for disabled access to the buses. Since spring 2010, bus platform 8 has also been equipped with a DFI display.
- Bus station - Bismarckstrasse
- The Bismarckstraße stop is reserved exclusively for regional buses, and space is also provided here for coaches. The individual stops are arranged along Bismarckstrasse, due to the intercity buses that mainly stop here, and the entrances of which usually have to climb several steps, an increase in the curb is not absolutely necessary.
- Bus station - Quellenbach multi-storey car park
- Reserved only for long-distance buses
Future development
Competition in bus transport
While in large parts of Germany - including Franconia and Bavaria - bus routes across Europe are already regularly tendered for competition, bus transport in Würzburg has so far been spared. Even the regional bus service, which is mainly favored for the competition, has not yet felt any of this. But this will change in the coming years, both in urban and regional traffic. In July 2013, the city of Würzburg awarded all inner-city tram and bus routes to the WSB by direct award. From January 1, 2014, the NVG will be entrusted with all inner-city bus routes, with the exception of routes 11, 14, 17, 18, 19 and 22 (now routes 521-523) by WSB. These contracts run for 9.5 years, at the same time as the concessions, until 2023. With its tender, the district is moving further away from the city in seven corridors and is developing its own public transport network. NVG loses seven bus routes and a large part of the order volume in the district.
Introduction of regular traffic
At the moment, regular regular service is only offered on six regional bus routes in the Würzburg district. In addition to line 43, the Maintal line 55 of the Burlein / Schraud from Würzburg to Frickenhausen and Ochsenfurt has been switched to a 60-minute cycle (every 120 minutes on weekends) for the 2006 summer schedule, for which the district has invested 110,000 euros. On December 9, 2007, a 30-minute cycle was introduced on line 45 to Rimpar / Maibronn (every 60 minutes on weekends). Line 48 has recently started running every 60 minutes during the week and every 120 minutes on Saturdays. For the most part, there is only one demand timetable on the other lines, which is based on the driving behavior of students and professionals. In addition, there are often large gaps in demand timetables ; in municipalities such as Greußenheim , Erlabrunn , Leinach , Kist and Eisingen , the timetable is below the legal guidelines. That is why the Greens in particular are pushing for a nationwide introduction of regular services, as this would encourage more people to switch to public transport. This is proven by the number of passengers on route 8066, on which twice as many passengers were counted just one year after the introduction of regular service. From December 12th, line 49 (Würzburg - Höchberg - Kist - Kleinrinderfeld) will also run at regular intervals. To conclude the campaign in the West, line 49 now runs every 60 minutes Monday to Friday, every 30 minutes in the afternoon and almost every 60 minutes on Saturdays. There is also a regular service on the lines 521/522, where a bus runs every 30 minutes between Würzburg and Margetshöchheim (every 60 minutes on Sundays), every second bus goes to Leinach. Intermittent traffic is currently being set up on many other lines. Several lines that overlap should be planned in such a way that a uniform cycle is created in the communities.
Reconstruction and relocation of the bus station
As part of the construction of a shopping center "Würzburg Arcaden" by Management für Immobilien AG (mfi) and the associated redesign of the train station and its immediate surroundings, the bus station was to be completely changed. The current area would have been partially renatured and incorporated into the Ringpark , the continuation of the arcades was planned on the site between the post office tower and the station building. The current bus station and the Bismarckstrasse side stop would have been dissolved and relocated to the location of today's short-term car park, where the Quellenbach multi-storey car park is already located today. The parking garage would have been torn down and a new central bus station (ZOB) would have been built in its place . On December 3, 2006 , the people of Würzburg voted in a referendum with around 51 to 49 percent against the arcade station project, which was linked to the relocation of the bus station. What the future of the area will look like remains to be seen, opponents of the arcades are now demanding new concepts from the city council . In addition, the mfi AG has announced that it will not withdraw from Würzburg, but instead may start again with the Arcaden after a one-year blocking period.
Night bus routes
Night bus routes have been operating again since November 4, 2016 after they were discontinued in 2010 due to lack of interest. There are eight lines in total, most of which only run in the night from Friday to Saturday and in the night from Saturday to Sunday.
Call collective taxi
In connection with the opening of the train stop in Reichenberg (line 31), numerous connections will be switched to collective call taxes (AST) due to competition with the faster train connections . Likewise on line 8 (Steinbachtal / Waldfriedhof). From Monday to Friday at 6 p.m., AST traffic is switched to. At the same time, however, the service time of this line will be extended to 10:30 pm. These collective call taxes can be used with normal vvm tickets, but they must be ordered by telephone 30 minutes before the scheduled departure, stating the boarding and disembarking stop.
