William Andrew Michael Junior Nylander Altelius ( William Nylander for short ; born May 1, 1996 in Calgary , Alberta ) is a Swedish - Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League since August 2014 . With the Swedish national team , he won the gold medal at the 2017 World Cup . His father Michael and brother Alexander Nylander are also professional ice hockey players.

Career

Nylander at the AHL All-Star Classic (2016)

Nylander was born in Calgary, Canada . His father Michael played there between 1995 and 1998 for the Calgary Flames in the National Hockey League . Nylander stayed with his family on the North American continent until 2011 before they returned to Europe and he hired at SDE HF . In 2012 he moved to Södertälje SK in HockeyAllsvenskan , where he made his professional debut on February 14, 2013. In his first professional game he played alongside his father Michael and scored his first assist with a goal by Johan Jonsson . In the summer of 2013 the striker finally moved to MODO Hockey Ornsköldsvik in Svenska Hockeyligan , who immediately loaned him to Rögle BK and later to Södertälje in Allsvenskan.

In August 2014 he received an NHL entry contract from the Toronto Maple Leafs from the National Hockey League (NHL), but continued to play on loan with MODO Hockey until January 2015. He then joined the farm team of the Maple Leafs, the Toronto Marlies from the American Hockey League (AHL), and got 32 scorer points in 37 remaining games of the season. After another year alternating between AHL and NHL, Nylander established himself in the Maple Leafs' NHL squad with the start of the 2016/17 season. He led the rookie scorer list of the NHL in the first month of the season with eleven points from nine games and was named as the NHL rookie of the month for October. He was awarded this prize again in March 2017. In total, Nylander scored 61 points in his first full NHL season, placing himself third on the rookie scorer list and was also part of a historic year of the Maple Leafs, which for the first time had three with Auston Matthews (1) and Mitchell Marner (4) Players among the top four rookies of a season from one team.

After the 2017/18 season, his entry-level contract with the Maple Leafs expired on July 1, 2018, so that he was henceforth a restricted free agent . Until the beginning of the following season 2018/19, the players and team could not agree on a new contract, so Nylander paused for the time being and trained in Europe. It was not until December 1, 2018, the deadline for such contracts, that the Swede signed a new six-year contract in Toronto, which should bring him an average annual salary of almost seven million US dollars.

International

On November 12, 2012, the International Ice Hockey Federation decided that the Canadian-born Nylander was eligible to play for Sweden. He then took part with the Swedish team in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2013 , where his team won the title. He also appeared at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in 2013 and the U18 Junior Ice Hockey World Championships in 2013 and 2014 .

At the 2015 World Cup , he had his first international appearances at U20 level. This was only followed by another at the U20 World Cup , where he injured himself in the first game after a check by Swiss Chris Egli and was unable to play the rest of the tournament.

At the 2017 World Cup , Nylander made his debut for the Swedish senior team and won the gold medal with them. He was also the best scorer of his team, recognized as the most valuable player of the tournament and voted into the All-Star Team .
