Discovery Kids is an American digital cable television channel, owned by Discovery Communications with programming for education of children. Discovery Kids broadcasted a Saturday morning E/I programming lineup for children which replaced TNBC called Discovery Kids on NBC, which ran from October 5, 2002 through September 2, 2006, when NBC ended the partnership and created a new E/I block called qubo.
In 2002, Discovery Kids began airing a reality television show entitled Endurance. The show is similar in nature to Survivor, whereby teams compete in exotic locales (such as Hawaii and Tehachapi) and, as of 2008, is in its sixth season.
Discovery Kids airs programming for children with an emphasis on real-life adventures, nature, science and wildlife from all over the world.
Programming
History
Discovery Kids was founded in 1996 by Discovery Communications. The first shows aired on the network was Discovery Kids Ultimated Guide to th Awesome, Jaws and Claws, Bonehead Detectives of the Paleoworld and Sci-Squad. In 1998 the logo was slightly redesigned and the network. It also introduced the preschool block Ready Set Learn. In 2002 the logo was redesigned and NBC had made an agreement to air shows from the network called Discovery Kids on NBC this replaced TNBC. Also during that year it introduced a large number of original shows such as Jeff Corwin Unleashed, Scout's Safari, Trading Spaces: Boys vs. Girls, Darcy's Wild Life and Tutenstein etc. And the channel's new mascot Chomp. In 2006 NBC lost rights to thier programming and replaced it with Qubo. In 2007 a new visual logo was applied and more original content was added to the network.
Programming blocks
Ready Set Learn
Added in 2002, a weekday morning block that airs preschool programming. It is currently syndicated on TLC and Discovery Kids, running weekdays from 9:00am-2:00pm.
Animal Afternoons
Added in 2002, a block that airs shows about animals, wildlife and nature from 2:00pm-5:00pm.
The Gaggle
Added in 2002, a block that airs 3 hours of one show weekends, including Endurance and Flight 29 Down. In 2008, The Gaggle was shortened to 1-2 hours. It was presumed The Gaggle was moved to Saturdays only.
Real Toons
Added in 2005, a block that airs animated series everyday at 6:00am-9:00am everyday and 6:00pm-8:00pm Monday to Saturday, Sunday from 7:00pm-9:00p,.
