İsmail Cem İpekçi (born February 15, 1940 in Istanbul , † January 24, 2007 ibid) was a Turkish journalist and politician.

Life

Cem came from a respected family who lived in Saloniki (Selânik) for hundreds of years and had to leave the country in connection with the population exchange between Greece and Turkey in 1923 .

After İsmail Cem graduated from Robert College in Istanbul in 1959, he studied at the Law Faculty of the University of Lausanne in 1963 . In 1983 he received a master's degree in sociology of politics from the École libre des sciences politiques in Paris . He was fluent in French and English.

After returning to Turkey in 1963, Cem began his career as a journalist . He became editor of Milliyet , later Cumhuriyet . Between 1971 and 1974 he headed the Turkish Journalists' Union ( Türkiye Gazeteciler Sendikası ). Under the first government of Prime Minister Bülent Ecevit (1974/75) he became director of the state television and radio station TRT .

On June 30, 1997, Cem became Foreign Minister under Ecevit. In various negotiations he achieved a better relationship with Greece. He maintained a good relationship with the Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Andrea Papandreou , which was also kept on friendly terms later on. He also advocated a strong bond between Turkey and the European Union.

At the end of a serious economic and political crisis in which Turkey got caught from 2001, Cem resigned from his office and left the Democratic Left Party (DSP). With his former ministerial colleagues Hüsamettin Özkan and Kemal Derviş , he founded the New Turkey Party (YTP), which was unsuccessful in the subsequent election . Then he withdrew from active politics.

İsmail Cem and Elçin Cem had a daughter, İpek, and a son, Kerim. He was a dedicated amateur photographer. On January 24, 2007, Cem died of lung cancer in Istanbul .

Awards

He was honored with the Best Statesman of the Year 2000 award , along with the Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Andrea Papandreou for promoting dialogue between the two nations.
