The Alaska House of Representatives ( Alaska House of Representatives ) is the lower house of the Alaska Legislature , the Legislature of the State of Alaska .

The Chamber of Parliament is composed of 40 members, each representing an electoral district. Each of these fixed units comprises an average of 15,673 inhabitants (as of 2000). The MPs are each elected for two-year terms; there is no limit to the terms of office. With 40 MPs, Alaska's lower house is the smallest Chamber of Parliament in the United States .

The House of Representatives boardroom, along with the State Senate, is located in the Alaska State Capitol in the capital, Juneau .

Structure of the chamber

The Speaker of the House is the Chairman of the House of Representatives . He is first elected by the majority parliamentary group in the chamber before confirmation by the entire parliament follows. The speaker is also responsible for the legislative process and oversees the assignments to the various committees. The current speaker since January 2009 is the Republican Mike Chenault from Nikiski .

Other important office holders are the majority leader and the opposition leader ( minority leader ), who are elected by the respective parliamentary groups. Majority leader is Republican Alan Austerman from Kodiak , minority leader is Democrat Beth Kerttula from Juneau.
