history

The Altenburg Benedictine Abbey, founded in 1144, has played a key role in shaping the history of Altenburg. La Tène settlement on the Kamp

In the Kampschlinge ( Umlaufberg ) near Altenburg, a Celtic settlement from the Latène period was excavated in the first third of the 20th century . Fireplaces, iron smelters, stone settings and paving were exposed. The finds were scattered finds from the Neolithic Age (11,500 to 2,200 BC) and the Hallstatt Period ( 800 to 475 BC), but above all from the La Tène period (5th to 1st century BC). ) available. Iron tools (knives, nails, staples), sword scabbard parts, hatchets, glass beads and ceramics (fragments of clay pots, bowls) indicate an unfortified settlement. The main focus of settlement was in the Middle and Late Latène Periods, but some ceramic fragments point to a settlement up to the 1st century AD.
