Club Deportivo Popular Junior FCSA , also known by its former official name Atlético Junior and as Junior de Barranquilla , is a football club from the city of Barranquilla on the Caribbean coast of Colombia . Junior is also called “Los Tiburones” ( The Sharks ).

history

Formerly used club crest

The club first attracted international attention when the legendary Brazilian Garrincha joined the club at short notice in 1968 . At that time, however, due to his physique, he was no longer able to give the club more than an exclamation mark.

Atlético Junior already won the championships in 1977 and 1980, but the years in the early 1990s are considered to be the big time when the club with the two-time South American Footballer of the Year Carlos Valderrama , who is considered the best Colombian player of all time, won two more titles . This team was defeated in the Copa Libertadores 1994 only in the semifinals to the eventual winner Vélez Sarsfield from Argentina.

After this episode, more emphasis was placed on the development of home grown crops. The next big success came back in 2004, when Atlético Junior won the last championship until 2010 by beating Atlético Nacional from Medellín on penalties . The Argentine Omar Sebastián Pérez was considered the heart of that team.

Junior was again champion in the back series in 2010.

Under coach Alexis Mendoza , who signed on in January 2015 , the club was able to win the Colombian Cup for the first time in 2015 . In addition, Junior was able to reach two runner-up championships in 2015 and 2016. However, Alexis Mendoza resigned in July 2016 due to a dispute with the club's owner, Fuad Char. However, under coach Giovanni Hernández , who was signed as a replacement for Mendoza, the club failed to make it into the final round of the Finalización. However, the club was able to qualify for the preliminary round of the Copa Libertadores 2017 due to the good streak . However, in November 2016, Hernández's dismissal was announced. The new coach for the 2017 season was Alberto Gamero , who had previously been successful as the coach of Deportes Tolima . After a poor start to the season, Gamero was released in March 2017. He was replaced by the Uruguayan Julio Comesaña , who began his seventh term at Junior. Junior failed to make it into the final round relatively clearly in twelfth place. In November 2017 , Junior won the Colombian Cup for the second time and qualified for the 2018 Copa Libertadores . In the championship, Junior was first in the league phase of the finalización, but then failed in the quarter-finals to América de Cali . Subsequently, Julio Comesaña announced his departure as coach. Alexis Mendoza was announced as successor in December 2017. After moderate successes, especially in the Copa Libertadores, Mendoza had to give up his coach on April 9, 2018. His successor is Julio Comesaña. This led Junior to the greatest international success in the history of the club. Just decided by a penalty shoot-out in the final, Junior was runner-up in the Copa Sudamericana 2018 . Three days later, on December 16, 2018, Junior became Colombian national champion for the eighth time .

For the season 2019 was Luis Fernando Suárez committed as the new head coach. At the beginning of the 2019 season, Junior won the Superliga de Colombia against Deportes Tolima . Nevertheless, after a lack of success in the Copa Libertadores 2019 , Luis Fernando Suárez was replaced at the beginning of May by Julio Comesaña as head coach, who took on this role at the junior for the 9th time. Less than six weeks later, on June 12, 2019, Junior won the third and ninth Colombian national championship under Comesaña.

Stadion

Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Meléndez

Junior plays his home games at the Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Meléndez , which was originally built for the 1986 World Cup , which was originally to be held in Colombia. The stadium was inaugurated in 1986 with a friendly international soccer match between Colombia and Uruguay , which the guests won 2-1.

The multi-purpose stadium, which once held 60,000 spectators, now only offers 50,000 seats. It also serves as the official home of the Colombian national team and was a venue for the 2001 Copa América .

Trivia

The club's mascot was an owl that lives under the roof of the stadium. The owl sometimes flew through the stadium during games and even landed on the field. The scandal came on February 27, 2011, when the owl was injured in the championship game against Deportivo Pereira . First the owl was hit by a ball on the playing field and lay dazed on the ground. Deportivo defender Luis Moreno then kicked the animal off the field. The action not only angered the fans, the Colombian environmental authority even initiated proceedings for animal cruelty. Immediately after the action, the owl was taken to a veterinary clinic and cared for there. The association initially stated that the owl only suffered a broken leg.

On March 2, 2011, however, it became known that the owl died of too high a lactic acid concentration.

Reebok Cup (1997)

In 1997 Junior took part in the first International Reebok Cup . Together with the teams Borussia Mönchengladbach , Necaxa from Mexico and Brazil's former champion SE Palmeiras . With a win by penalty shoot-out after a 2-2 draw against Palmeiras, Junior was in the final with Borussia Mönchengladbach, who had previously defeated Necaxa 2-1.

In the final on 27 July at Soldier Field , Chicago (USA) defeats Junior 2 - 0 Borussia Moenchengladbach.
