Auburndale is a city in Polk County in the US state of Florida with 13,507 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Auburndale is bordered by the towns of Lake Alfred and Winter Haven . The city is about 20 km north of Bartow and about 60 km east of Tampa .

history

Auburndale's roots can be traced back to 1873 when John Ledue became the first official settler on Lake Ariana . The first house was built in 1884, 4 months after the South Florida Railroad was completed. In April 1924 the subsidiary Florida, Western and Northern Railroad of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad was founded, which was to build a railway line from Coleman via Auburndale and Sebring to West Palm Beach . The entire corridor was opened in January 1925. In 1988 the Coleman - Auburndale section was closed again shortly after the takeover by CSX .

Religions

Auburndale currently has 23 different churches with 13 different denominations. Among the churches belonging to a denomination, the Baptist congregation is most strongly represented with 5 churches. There are 3 churches that do not belong to any denomination (as of 2004).

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 13,507 inhabitants were distributed over 5,670 households. The population density was 1000.5 inh / km². 80.0% of the population identified themselves as whites, 12.8% as African American , 0.4% as Indians and 1.2% as Asian Americans . 3.5% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.2% to several ethnic groups. 13.1% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010, children under the age of 18 lived in 37.8% of all households and persons aged 65 and over lived in 26.8% of all households. 73.7% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.71 people and the average family size was 3.11 people.

28.6% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 24.4% were 20 to 39 years old, 27.6% were 40 to 59 years old, and 19.4% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 38 years. 48.3% of the population were male and 51.7% were female.

The median annual income was $ 42,099, with 19.8% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 91.60% of the population, 7.52% spoke Spanish and 0.88% spoke another language.

The crime rate was 408 points in 2010 (US average: 266 points) in the average range. There was one murder, two rapes, 18 robberies, 43 assaults, 199 break-ins, 575 thefts and 23 car thefts.
