background

After the mixtape Die John Bello Story 3 was published in spring 2010 , Kool Savas announced in interviews a collaboration album with soul singer Xavier Naidoo and a joint album with producer Melbeatz and singer Moe Mitchell under the name MMS as upcoming projects on. For this reason, the announcement of the release of Savas' third solo album in spring 2011 was received as a surprise by media representatives. On June 3, 2011, Kool Savas announced Aura as the title of his album via the youth magazine Bravo Hiphop Special and his homepage . The publication date was also communicated in this context. Advance sales of the three versions of the album began at the end of September. On October 3, 2011, Kool Savas announced the completion of the recordings for Aura via the communication platform Twitter .

The track listing for the album was announced on October 4, 2011. On the same day, Savas presented some songs from his album as part of an exclusive listening session at Sofitel in Berlin . The rapper's family, media representatives and musician colleagues were invited to this. Participants in the presentation included Visa Vie , Falk Schacht , Plan B , Buddy Ogün , Laas Unltd. , Wilson Gonzalez Ochsenknecht , Jimi Blue Ochsenknecht and Spaiche, co-founder of Aggro Berlin .

When choosing the album title, Kool Savas said that it was primarily about the meaning of the word aura "in the sense of charisma". He hoped that the audience would get an impression of his personality. This is the cause of Kool Savas' charisma, which is perceived by visitors at concerts, for example. The expression “aura” as the album title had been fixed for a long time for Kool Savas and was taken up in various recordings. Savas made a short guest contribution to the play Strassenrap is sexually aroused thanks to Kool Savas from the album TAFKAAZ: D by the rapper Kaas , in which he raps: “I believe in it, you and I, we both have what we are looking for can't buy any coal on earth - aura! "

music

Kool Savas performs his lyrics on hip-hop beats. The underlying music production was contributed by DJ Smoove , Sir Jai, Melbeatz , Jerrycanists, Baltar, Den Hätrz, Sinch, Ken Kenay, 7inch and Savas himself. Interlude was produced by Kool Savas, DJ Smoove and Sir Jai. DJ Smoove also took over the production of the intro / the last of my genre , Never go again , Optimal use of our resources , The Voice and Echo . The contact to DJ Smoove came about as part of a collaboration between Kool Savas and the rap duo Automatikk . Savas met the duo to record the album Vermächtnis in the producer's Bamberg studio. DJ Smoove then got the opportunity to contribute productions for Aura . To make the best use of our resources , Jerrycanists appeared as a co-producer. Melbeatz, who was regularly involved in Savas' earlier releases, directed the production, and then Essah joined. Sir Jai was responsible for the piece Aura , Baltar for Nothing Remains and Den Hätrz for Stampf . Sinch and Ken Kenay also produced King of Rap / Ein Wunder and 7inch LMS in 2012 .

In addition to the production of the recordings, music was also played over the basic structure of the songs. In most cases, the same person was responsible for the production and the music, with the hip-hop musicians involved recording the music under their real names. Melanie Wilhelm, who appears as a producer under the pseudonym Melbeatz, was responsible for the music of Und Then came Essah . The music for Interlude was recorded by Savaş Yurderı, Andre Schmidt and Joachim Piehl. Andre Schmidt was involved in the musical design of Intro / the last of my genre , Nie mehr gehtn , Die Voice , Echo and, in collaboration with Fabian Grewe and Christopher Hyna, optimal use of our resources . Michael Reinbacher and Jörg Alea Roth played the music to nothing more . The music for Stampf goes back to Melanie Wilhelm and Michael Jackson. Sinchi Wichmann and Yanek Stark created the music for King of Rap / Ein Wunder , Joachim Piehl for Aura and Simon Eichinger for LMS 2012 .

In contrast to earlier publications, the use of samples was largely dispensed with and, in certain cases, excerpts from other pieces were played. For the title song Aura, an excerpt from the soundtrack composed by Hans Zimmer for the US film Inception was selected. This was done by Philipp Knaak, Nick Hilger, Sir Jai and Steffen v. Massow re-recorded. An excerpt from another piece of music by G. Hugle and Sir Jai was also played back for The Voice . The only sample that was used was part of the song Nothing Remains by Saltatio Mortis for the piece Nothing Remains .

For some pieces, additional keyboard sounds, so-called “Additional Keys”, were recorded. G. Hugle played music for Interlude , Intro / the last of my genre and And then Essah came in . For the theme song Aura , additional keyboard sounds were contributed by Lazy Day Music Berlin. Daniel Russ also played keyboard for Echo . In addition, Sir Jai was involved in And then Essah .

The stylistic device of scratching , which is characteristic of hip-hop music , in which the sound is generated by the manual movement of a running vinyl record, was used for some pieces. In the case of interlude and optimal use of our resources , the technique of DJ Ray D was used. On And then came Essah and pitching can be heard Scratches by Sir Jai.

After completing the sound recordings, editing was carried out by mixing . Sir Jai mixed the pieces in his studio Sir Jai's Hitcrib . Chris Athens did the final audio post-production. He carried out the so-called mastering in New York's Sterling Sound .

Guest Posts

In addition to the lecture by Kool Savas, the Scala Chor , the soul singer Xavier Naidoo and the rapper Olli Banjo are performed with guest contributions on Aura . For Nothing more remains sang at La Scala chorus the refrain of the piece and can be heard in the background during the verses of Savas. Olli Banjo, who has worked with Kool Savas several times in the past, sings the hookline for Echo . He also has a rap contribution to the piece. Xavier Naidoo's vocals can be heard in the final LMS 2012 . The title was placed as the last song on the album as a reference to the album planned for 2012 by Savas and Naidoo.

So-called backing vocals are used as a further stylistic device for the piece Nie mehr gehn . These serve to reinforce the rapper's voice in the chorus of the song and were sung by the singer Sarah-Ann. Another musician who contributes backing vocals is Moe Mitchell in And Then came Essah . Furthermore, additional vocals can be heard in some of the songs, which are performed as additional vocals. Sarah-Ann's singing can be heard in the background of Kool Savas' stanzas in The Voice . Xavier Naidoo has sung two verses of the refrain of Aura . The hook of the song And then came Essah consists of the singing of Alex Prince and the audience of the festival Openair Frauenfeld .

The title Nothing Remains is introduced by a poem recited by Savas' father Fazli Yurderi. A voice sample from Falk's Diggin 'was used for Stampf .

illustration

The cover shows a painting that the Swiss artist Onur Dinc made by Kool Savas. This was painted photo-realistically . In the original it was made with acrylic paint on a canvas and has a size of 50 cm × 70 cm. Dinc made other portraits of Savas, one of which was used on the cover of an issue of Juice magazine . The poster enclosed with the Limited-Deluxe-Edition has a size of 89 cm × 62 cm and was also painted by Dinc with acrylic on cardboard. In addition to his paintings, Onur Dinc was also responsible for the graphic concept of Aura . The idea of a booklet that can be read in UV radiation goes back to the Swiss. Eric Ullrich was also responsible for the graphic and technical implementation of the artwork. The press images and photos that served as templates for the paintings were made by Katja Kuhl.

On October 21, 2011 Essah Entertainment released the title song Aura, the first track as a download single. In addition to the album version, the single contains the instrumental and the a cappella version of Aura . Although the single was initially not marketed by publishing a video clip, Aura entered the German single charts at number 14. Also in the second week the single stayed in the top 20 with position 19. In Austria the single was in position 33, in Switzerland with position 13 the best position for Aura in the single charts could be achieved. One day after the album was released, a video for Aura was subsequently released . Kool Savas later stated in an interview that a video for Aura had been shot early, which, in his opinion, "did not reflect the song". Because of this, the rapper stopped publishing the clip and flew to the Highlands in Scotland to shoot a new video. For the visual implementation, he wanted to "let nature simply speak" and completely dispensed with special effects . The Aura video received 1 million views on the YouTube platform in the first ten days of its launch. Kool Savas presented his single Aura together with Sir Jai and the Leon Taylor Band on November 30, 2011 on TV total . He had previously spoken to Stefan Raab for the first time as part of the show .

In addition to the video for the single Aura , a clip was shot in which part of the play Optimal use of our resources is presented. The song LMS 2012 , created together with Xavier Naidoo, was released on November 19, 2011 as a free song on the Internet. At the end of December, the visual implementation of the piece Nothing Remains . The production of the music video was taken over by Bears Calling GmbH. Kolja Brandt directed and Rain Kencana was responsible for editing the clip as editor . As another song was And then came Essah visually implemented. The video was released on March 20, 2012 and contains excerpts from the "Aura" tour. In addition, the Swiss artist Onur Dinc made murals for the video shoot. In mid-August 2012, a video about Never Go Again was released .

At the end of September, a video for the song King of Rap / A Miracle was released as part of the online television format Shut Up by Aggro.TV .

Juice Special Issue

The German hip-hop magazine Juice published a special issue on Kool Savas on November 11, 2011. It illuminates both the life of the private person Savaş Yurderi and the rapper's musical career. The editorial team conducted interviews with musical companions such as Curse , Melbeatz, Ono, Marcus Staiger , Xavier Naidoo, Illmatic , Ercandize , Moses Pelham and Sir Jai as well as with the musician's parents Hilde and Fazli Yurderi. Furthermore, the Juice sheds light on Kool Savas' discography, public debates with other representatives of the hip-hop scene and the influence of the rapper using the examples of Alpa Gun , Laas Unltd. and Morlockk's dilemma . A DVD is enclosed with the magazine, on which excerpts from the creation of the album Aura can be seen.

tour

At the same time as the release of Aura , Savas completed an autograph tour. The rapper appeared on seven dates in six different cities.

Savas completed two tours after the album was released. On January 18, 2012, the “Aura” tour began with a concert in Cologne. After ten appearances, the tour ended on January 28, 2012. Since Kool Savas is aiming to publish a live album after the tour, all concerts on the “Aura” tour were recorded as “multitrack recordings”.

Since the end of March 2012, concerts under the motto “Kool Savas and the League of Extraordinary Mcees” have followed. Kool Savas was there by the hip-hop musicians Olli Banjo , Die Orsons and Laas Unltd. as well as the comedian Buddy Ogün . The tour included fourteen appearances.

reception

success

Aura went straight to number 1 in the German album charts, making it the first album by Kool Savas to reach the top position. In the first week, 37,529 units of the album were sold. Of these, 27,370 copies were purchased as physical CDs and 10,159 in digital form. Aura was thus able to record the most first week sales of the albums of the German hip-hop genre released until November 2011 . In Switzerland too, Savas achieved first place for the first time with Aura . In Austria the album entered position 6. Kool Savas stated in an interview that as an artist without the support of a major label, he did not expect a number one placement. In addition, the success is particularly gratifying, as Aura was published in the best-selling quarter of the year. In the German album charts, the album fell to number 19 in the second week. In early 2012, Media Control published the list of the best-selling independent albums in 2011, in which Aura reached number 4. According to Kool Savas, 78,000 units of Aura had been sold by the end of January 2012 . For this, the album was awarded Impala Gold in December 2012 . On January 4, 2013 it was announced that 100,000 units of Aura had been sold in Germany, which means that the publication has achieved gold status .

criticism

The Laut.de e-zine awarded Aura the highest rating with five out of a possible five points . Savas presented battle rap, which clearly stood out from the competition, and was also solid enough to allow “insights into his private world of thoughts and feelings”. From the editor Dani Fromm's point of view, the private insights do not provide any “cause for foreign shame.” Also elements such as “hooklines or entire parts by Xavier Naidoo , […] useless plastic effects on the voice and sheer sobbing women or elaborate choir singing” are part of the Use on other music albums are negatively criticized by the editor, "contribute to a coherent, enormously atmospheric overall picture." Fromm rates the beats of the album, including the songs Intro / The Last of My Genus , And Dann Kam Essah and Nothing Remains , also positive. Above all, the production of the theme song unfolds a "theatrical, super-human-sized scenario that is reminiscent of endless landscape shots". In their collaboration, Kool Savas and Olli Banjo remind Echo of the duo Eminem and Royce da 5'9 ″ . Savas's greatest strength is his “wonderful language”, through which the album “bursts with an eloquence that effortlessly justifies placing its author 'right next to Hesse and Brecht in the Hugendubel '.” In conclusion, Dani Fromm praises that for Aura unnecessary filling material was dispensed with.

Florian Reiter wrote a review for the website Rap.de, in which he primarily addresses the development of Savas. While Savas at the beginning of his career "attacked the restrictive perceived norms of the then prevailing middle class rap, now a decade later he feels it is his duty to defend rap culture against talentless gangsters and fagot pantyhose." Kool Savas is a conservative rapper who, on the one hand, does not dare to make any major musical experiments and, on the other hand, would not adapt his music to mass tastes. Reiter sees this as a problem, since for numerous hip-hop journalists and fans of rapper the "phase between" LMS "and" NLP "is still perceived as the golden era of Savas' creativity". Savas has "long won the war against the rap establishment and has become an establishment itself, blessing or curse of all revolutionaries." Above all, the rapper uses aura to manage his status. In terms of content, there is little variety on the album, so the listener pays attention to Savas' presentation technique. This is the rapper's greatest strength and is characterized by "abrupt flow changes, quick tempo variations [and] crazy rhyme schemes". Contrary to the announcements in advance of the release, according to Reiter, it is not a personal album. On the contrary, the fictional character Kool Savas allows "only a few glimpses into her private life, her emotional world or her political worldview." The pieces are rated positively. Nothing remains and, despite the "stupid hookline ", never leaving . In summary, Aura is a "largely straightforward album on which Kool Savas demonstrates his outstanding skills" on the microphone.

The Backspin Hip Hop Magazine published a review of Aura on its website , in which the reactions of journalists and fans to the mere announcement of a Kool Savas album are compared with a scene from the novel The Perfume , “in which Jean Baptiste Grenouille the market square in Grasse enchants the crowds with its perfume obtained from the smell of the murdered women. ”From the editor's point of view, this results in numerous positive reviews, which are written before the opportunity to hear the album. In contrast to other prominent hip-hop musicians who have enlarged their “musical radius”, Savas is “about flows, rhymes, technology.” The editor finds positive criticism for the theme song, the “perfectly written verses” and one very positive good refrain from Xavier Naidoo. In contrast, Naidoo's contribution to LMS 2012 can be dispensed with. The choir singing out of nowhere stays fit in the run-up to Christmas, but is also rated negatively. Even the hookline from The Voice does not stand up to the comparison with the verses of the piece. In summary, the album offers rap “at the very highest level” and can be described with the adjectives “spherical, bold, tidy [and] cool”.

Leaderboards

At the beginning of December 2011, the editorial team of the Laut.de website positioned Kool Savas' album Aura at number 5 among the best hip hop albums of the year. For the independent music distributor Groove Attack , Aura was the most successful album in 2011.

At the annual Hiphop.de Awards of the website Hiphop.de the album Aura was awarded in the category Best National Album . In addition, the title song Aura reached first place in the category Best Single National .

Further publication

Cover of the album "Aura Live"

On March 23, 2012, Essah Entertainment released the live album Aura Live , the recordings of which were made as part of Kool Savas' "Aura" tour. In addition to the songs, the album also contains a video recording of a concert on DVD. For Aura Live , the live versions of the pieces from the Aura album as well as some earlier titles such as Rapfilm , Futurama or Tribut were selected. According to Kool Savas, the expanded title list is to be understood as a reaction to the criticism that Aura has too short a running time.

After Aura had achieved gold status in early 2013 with 100,000 units sold, the album was re-released as a free stream via the Internet video portal YouTube .
