Elfenau / Brunnadern (also: Brunnadere ) is the largest common quarter in the statistical district 20 Brunnadern of district IV ( Kirchenfeld-Schosshalde ). It borders on the Elfenau-Park and Egghölzli quarters , as well as the Dählhölzli , Gryphenhübeli / Thunplatz , the Murifeld and forms the city limits to Muri in the west .

In 2019, 3900 residents were registered in the quarter, of which 3173 were Swiss and 727 were foreigners.

The name Brunnadern for the area between Dählhölzli and Elfenauhölzli points to good sources, there were several estates. Mechthild von Seedorf founded a women's monastery in 1285 near the current "Brunnnadere-Huus" property , which was subordinated to the Dominicans in 1286 and later moved to the city (island monastery). After its destruction, a new building was erected which served various purposes - including a laundry Ironing egg. In 1855 a home for young girls was founded - from 1940 as the "Evangelical Girls' Home Brunnadern" and today after the renovation of the Brunnadere Huus as an outdoor living group. Today the site is integrated into the "ElfenauPark" residential and nursing home.

The name Elfenau was invented by the Russian Grand Duchess Anna Feodorowna , who bought the property as a place of retreat around 1816.

Numerous embassies are located in representative city villas in the quarter. The residential development also consists of single and multi-family houses, some of them villa-like.

The tram lines 6, 7 and 8 connect the quarter with the center. The bus line 19 and 31 operate through the quarter.
