Botany (Hungarian Battyán - to 1888 Bottyán ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with a population of 1,224 (December 31, 2019), which for Okres Trebišov of, a circle kraj Košický heard. It is part of the traditional Zemplín landscape .

geography

The community is located in the south-east of the Eastern Slovak Lowlands , more precisely in the Medzibodrožie (Hungarian Bodrogköz ) called landscape between the Bodrog or here Latorica and the Tisza . The Ukrainian border runs just a few kilometers to the east. The center of the village is located at an altitude of 101  m nm and is ten kilometers from Čierna nad Tisou , eleven kilometers from Kráľovský Chlmec and 63 kilometers from Trebišov (both by road).

Neighboring communities are Kapušianske Kľačany and Ptrukša in the north, Čierna in the southeast, Čierna nad Tisou in the south, Bačka in the west and, very briefly, Leles in the northwest.

history

Boťany as a place was mentioned in the 13th century as an estate of comes Beche. In particular, he is recorded in 1332 as Bacian or Bathian ; other old names are Bacchian (1404), Baytam (1429) and Bottyan and Batthyan (1480). In the 14th century the village belonged to the Bacskai and Bottyán families , in the 15th century it belonged to the Pányi family , then to the Tarkányi families (in the 16th century) and Sennyey (from 1698 to the 19th century).

In 1557 Boťany had a total of eight portals , in 1715 27 abandoned and ten inhabited households. In 1763 the whole village burned down. In 1828 there were 112 houses and 826 inhabitants who lived from agriculture and as forester in the once larger forest areas.

Until 1918/1919, the place in Semplin County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. On the basis of the First Vienna Arbitration Award , he was in Hungary again from 1938 to 1944.

According to the 2011 census, Boťany had 1,256 inhabitants, including 824 Magyars, 228 Roma, 159 Slovaks, two Czechs and one Moravian and one Russian. 41 residents gave no information in this regard. 893 residents committed to the Roman Catholic Church, 94 residents to the Reformed Church, 89 residents to the Greek Catholic Church, 18 residents to the Jehovah's Witnesses and one resident to the Evangelical Church AB; one resident professed a different denomination. 90 inhabitants had no denomination and the denomination of 70 inhabitants was not determined.
