Altenburg Castle Stables

The Altenburg castle stable , more appropriately referred to as the Altenburg ramparts , is located in the district of Bachhaupt of the Upper Palatinate market in Breitenbrunn (Upper Palatinate) in the Neumarkt district in the Upper Palatinate . The hill fort is designated by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation as a ground monument D-3-6935-0093.

description

In Breitenbrunn a small stream flows into the Wissinger Laber . On the tongue of the hill between this brook valley and a north-northwest lying dry valley lies an extensive rampart ( section rampart ). The mountain tongue is cut off by a 110 m long transverse wall with a pointed ditch in front . The wall is 8 m wide and 1.3 m high towards the interior and 2.5 m high towards the bottom of the trench. On the steeper side, the wall bends about 25 m against the steep slope edge and leaves a narrow strip free against the steep slope edge. The wall also turns in on the other side, following the edge of the slope; At first this wall section is 1 m high, but then disappears in the middle of the long side. The tip of the mountain tongue is set off against the slope by a sharp edge.

In the north-north-west direction there is another rampart in the form of a rectangular forest, which is to be referred to as the outer bailey. This system does not seem to have been created at the same time as the aforementioned ramparts. On the steeper east side, this wall is indented about 12 m. It leaves a berm free in its entire length , on which a forest path now runs. At the northeast corner, the location of a former tower is assumed due to an increase and extension of the transverse wall. The length of the edge ramparts is 100 m, that of the transverse rampart 125 m. The height of the wall inwards is 0.5 m, and towards the outside it is 2.5 m; the width of the wall is 8 m. Gate systems cannot be seen. The system is disturbed by recent breakthroughs.

history

The complex is referred to as a Mesolithic open-air station , also as a settlement of the Cham culture and the Latène period . In the north, outside the ramparts, there were pieces of flint , prehistoric shards and a quartz pebble used as a striking stone , which are now kept in the Historical Museum of Regensburg .
