Calden is a municipality in the northern Hessian district of Kassel ( Germany ).

It is best known for the Wilhelmsthal Palace and the Kassel-Calden Airport , which opened in 1970 and which, after being expanded and rebuilt, has been a regional airport since April 2013 and has been known as Kassel Airport since 2015 .

The municipality of Calden, with its core town on the Langen and Staufenberg plates , is around twelve kilometers (as the crow flies ) northwest of the city center of Kassel . The main village is traversed by the Calde , whose water flows northeast over the Suderbach into the Esse . Among the rivers of the community including the forge inflow Jungfernbach the southern Wilhelmsthal and the fog Beeke , approximately northward through the western districts Ehrsten , Meimbressen and Westuffeln flowing and passing through the district Obermeiser running warm leads.

The highest point in the municipality is at 430  m above sea level. NHN the summit of the Postenberg , southwest of Fürstenwald , a northern branch of the Hohen Dörnberg ( 578.7  m ), which belongs to the Habichtswälder Bergland and is located just outside the municipality , and the lowest north of Obermeiser at about 170  m at the outflow of the warmth from the municipality. The main village lies at about 230 (on the Calde ) to 285  m (on the Wilhelmsthaler Höhe ) height. The "legendary" Reinhardswald lies about 10 to 15 km east to northeast .

Calden borders the city of Liebenau in the north, the city of Grebenstein in the east, the municipality Espenau in the southeast, the city Vellmar in the southeast, the municipality Ahnatal in the south, the city Zierenberg in the west and the municipality in the northwest Breuna (all in the Kassel district).

In the area between the districts of Calden and Ehrsten, important archaeological finds from the Neolithic period were made. The gallery graves Calden I and II from the 2nd millennium BC are located in Calden . BC, as well as the Calden earthworks and numerous tombs.

Ehrsten was first mentioned in a document in 817 as the oldest district.

In the course of administrative reform in Hesse Calden was with the hitherto independent neighboring community Meimbressen on a voluntary basis for expanded community Calden at 31 December 1970 together . Westuffeln was added on February 1, 1971. Fürstenwald followed on April 1, 1972. The series of incorporations was completed by Ehrsten and Obermeiser on August 1, 1972 with the incorporation by virtue of state law.

The non-party professional soldier Maik Mackewitz was elected the new mayor of Calden in the second ballot in October 2014. Incumbent Andreas Dinges (independent) held the office for 18 years.

Economy and Infrastructure

Kassel-Calden Airport (Kassel Airport) is located in the municipality of Calden . The municipality has a 3 percent stake in the operating company.

The municipality can be reached in particular on federal road 7 ( bypass under construction ; 2016-2022), which, coming from Kassel in the southeast, runs through Vellmar and, among other things, through the main village and passing the airport further to Warburg , which is located northwest ; in Kassel, Vellmar and Calden the B 7 is called Holländische Straße .

Four bus lines of the North Hessian Transport Association run through Calden: 46, 47, 100, 130. All of them only cross at Kassel-Calden Airport at the Flughafen Kassel Terminal, Calden stop , which is the main transfer point.

On the southwestern edge of the district Fürstenwald is located on section Zierenberg -Fürstenwald- Weimar the railway Volkmarsen-Vellmar-Obervellmar of Calden-Fürstenwald station with a track. The RT 4 of the RegioTram Kassel runs on the route, which travels to the southeast through Ahnatal and Vellmar and, among other things, on the tracks of Holländische Strasse to Kassel Central Station or to the southwest through Zierenberg to Wolfhagen .
