The Comas District is one of the 43 urban districts of the Lima Metropolitana Region in Peru . Located north of Lima, Comas is one of the most densely populated settlements in Peru. In terms of urban planning, Comas can be classified as an informal settlement . The current mayor of Comas is Raúl Díaz Pérez (since 2019) . The Comas district and the city of La Libertad are virtually identical.

Comas has a size of 48.75 km². The town hall is 140 meters above sea level. It is bordered to the north by the Carabayllo district , to the east by San Juan de Lurigancho , to the south by Independencia and to the west by Puente Piedra and Los Olivos .

Demography, History and Social Situation

At the 2017 census, Comas had 520,450 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 404,352, in 2007 it was 486,977.

During the first years of its history, Comas was a Pueblo Jóven . The previously practically uninhabited "Pampa de Comas" was settled by immigrants from the Peruvian highlands in the 1960s.

Comas is one of the poorer districts of Lima. According to a BBC documentary, the former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham lived in the Lomas de Carabayllo district of Comas for a while to see how donations raised are used for a sports project.

There is a school in Comas that is mainly financed by German donations, the Gutenberg School (primary level only). Children from poor families receive a solid education here. There is a second, larger Gutenberg school in the El Agustino district (where the secondary school is located).
