Complicated is a song by the Barbadian singer Rihanna from her fifth music album Loud (2010). The song was written and produced by Tricky Stewart and Ester Dean . Complicated is a dance-pop , hip-hop, and trance song. The song is about how two people get into conflict in a relationship. The song was praised by the critics, some even called it the best song on the album Loud , and Rihanna's singing was also praised. Even before the album was released in November 2010, the song reached number 50 in South Korea.
Background and inspiration
Complicated was written and produced by Tricky Stewart and Ester Dean for Rihanna's fifth music album Loud . The song was recorded in 2010 at Westlake Recording Studios and Larrabee Sound Studios in Los Angeles , California . In an interview with MTV's Sway Calloway , Rihanna explained the meaning behind Complicated :
Complicated is not a sex thing. It's not like only women can sing this song or only women can relate to this song, 'cause it's an individual thing and sometimes, sometimes men are just too complicated and then again, men can find women complicated. But it all depends on the individual, because not all women think love is complicated and not all men think that, but there are some women and some men who strongly believe that love is just too complicated. Women, they're the first to say, 'It's your fault', but most of the time it is [the man's] fault. But men are also great at turning that [shit] around on us and making us believe that we're wrong for something that we didn't even do. At the end of the day, love is [fucking] complicated.

criticism
Complicated received critical acclaim. Colin Gentry from 4Music called the song the highlight of the album. The New York Times' Jon Parales described Complicated as one of Loud's more emotional songs . Emily Mackay of NME explained that lines like "Why do you make it so hard to love you? / I hate it" reminded her of the songs of the British girl group Sugababes .
Nima Baniamer from Contactmusic.com praised Rihanna's singing and compared it to California King Bed : " California King Bed and Complicated are two songs that harmonize with Rihanna's brilliant singing." Baniamer also expressed that it was a "travesty" if that Song is not released as a single. Genevieve Koski from The AV Club compared the song to What's My Name? and wrote: "Her bubbly patois and soaring divatronics elevate the generic R&B and Euro-dance flavors of 'What's My Name' and 'Complicated', respectively." However, Bill Lamb of About.com criticized the song, calling it "low- point "(Eng .:" low point ") of the album.

Even before Loud was released , Complicated debuted in South Korea on November 14, 2010 at number 50, which also remained the highest ranking. In other countries, the song could not place in the charts.
